Updated: 30 days ago
Job Type: Permanent

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Laboratory of Food Systems Biotechnology (FSB) develops computational methods and utilizes "omics" technologies to study microbial ecosystems in food production and human health, with the ultimate goal of creating microbial communities and products that optimize food quality, safety, and human health.

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in microbiome bioinformatics and/or metagenomics to join our team.

Job description

You will join a collaborative team of scientists who develop and use molecular, deep sequencing, and bioinformatics methods to study microbiomes at the interface between foods and human health.

You will develop and utilize multi-omics approaches to study microbiome functional interactions in foods and food systems. This will include use of technologies such as shotgun metagenome sequencing, nanopore or Pacbio sequencing, as well as Illumina marker-gene sequencing to study microbiomes within food systems. You will use QIIME 2 and other bioinformatics software for analysis and integration of microbiome datasets together with other data (e.g., enviornmental, metabolomics data, etc). You will design and conduct new studies in addition to analyzing existing sequence datasets.

Your profile

You are passionate about researching microbial ecosystems, DNA sequencing technologies, and bioinformatics! You are thrilled by the scientific process, and wish to apply your skills to study microbial ecosystems in food production. You are skilled in biological data analysis and comfortable working with different types of omics data and microbial bioinformatics techniques. You are familiar with the use of nucleotide sequence data repositories and community metadata standards used in microbiological research.  You like new challenges and learning new techniques and technologies, and are not daunted by the emerging challenges in a dynamic research environment. You like to collaborate with others to bring new ideas and projects to fruition.

Key Qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in microbiology, molecular biology, food microbiology, biology, ecology, bioinformatics, computational biology, or other relevant fields
  • Outstanding record of scientific communication and publications
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, teamwork and organizational skills
  • Ability to plan and direct complex research projects
  • English language proficiency (written and spoken)

Desired qualifications:

  • Experience using QIIME 2 or other bioinformatics software for microbiome data analysis
  • Experience with shotgun metagenome sequencing and data analysis
  • Experience with nanopore or PacBio sequencing and data analysis
  • Experience with metabolomics
  • Experience with DNA sequencing library preparation
  • Experience with Python and/or R
  • Familiarity with high-performance-computing environments
  • Familiarity with laboratory automation techniques
