Postdoctoral position on galaxy evolution at EPFL

Updated: 4 months ago
Deadline: 15 Feb 2024

The École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) and the Laboratory for Astrophysics (LASTRO) invite applications for  a Postdoctoral position. The successful candidate will join the Galaxy evolution group led by Prof. Pascale Jablonka, which tackles a variety of hot topics ranging from the formation of the first stars and galaxies to the cosmic large scale structures and galaxy clusters. Both observations and numerical simulations are conducted and developped.

Project description: We are looking for talented young researchers interested in understanding the coevolution of galaxies and the cosmic web.The selected candidates will have the opportunity to pursue research in the topic of star formation fueling and quenching in galaxy clusters and their related large scale structures, as witnessed both at high redshift and in the local universe. This involves the analysis of ground-based optical, near-IR images and spectra, CO NOEMA and ALMA, as well as HI MeerKAT datasets.  The preparation of the MOONS GTO as well as JWST programs will be another major thread of the work.

The candidates should be strongly motivated by observational astrophysics and data analysis. They should have received education in astrophysics and cosmology. Full working proficiency of the English language is required.

We particularly encourage applications of young researchers with expertise in the high-redshift universe and/or large scale structures, and/or  galaxy clusters.  Experience in numerical simulations and/or image processing and deconvolution will be appreciated. The appointment will be for 2+1 years, with the final year awarded on successful performance.

Working environment: EPFL is recognized as one of the best Universities in Europe and covers both engineering and fundamental sciences. Astrophysicists at EPFL are involved in different large-scale surveys, such as SDSS-V, DESI, WEAVE, 4MOST, MOONS, and EUCLID. EPFL is a member of the SKA Organisation. Our spatial proximity with astrophysicists at the University of Geneva allows for fruitful and stimulating scientifically interactions.

Starting date and benefits: The starting date is anticipated to be in the Fall of 2024, although different dates can be discussed. Salary depends on qualification and comes with extensive social benefits, allowing for a high level living standard in Switzerland. Equal opportunities and diversity are an integral part of personnel and organisational development at EPFL.

How to apply: The application should include:

  • A motivation letter (1 page max),
  • A curriculum vitae (incl. publications)
  • A summary of research experience (3 pages max, references do not count).

All documents should be concatenated in one single pdf file and sent to [email protected]  no later than February 15, 2024, with "Postdoc Galaxy evolution" and the name of the applicant in the subject line.

Applicants should also arrange for 3 letters of references, which have to be sent by the referees to [email protected]  by February 15, 2024 as well.
