Offer Description
The Department of Ancient Civilizations is home to all disciplines within the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences that deal with the ancient world (archaeology, history, literature). It invites applications for a postdoctoral career development position ('wissenschaftliche Assistenz') in Latin, to be taken up by 1 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position will be available for two years in the first instance, with the possibility of extension for another four years after positive review.
Deadline for applications: 2 April 2024.
Starting date: 1 August 2024 or as soon as possible thereafter.
Interviews are expected to take place on Monday, 22 April 2024, online via Zoom.
The successful candidate will engage in research, with an excellent project in Latin literature that will result in a second monograph and eventually meet the requirements for Habilitation at the University of Basel.
The post-holder will offer two hours per week of undergraduate teaching, share in committee work and subject administration, contribute to the supervision and pastoral care of students, and play a positive part in various on-going projects at the Department, including outreach and public engagement.
Candidates are expected to have completed their doctorate in Classics / Latin with outstanding success and to provide plans for an innovative research project in the field of Latin Studies (second book). They will have relevant teaching experience and a strong publication record commensurate with the career stage. The successful candidate will have a wide range of interests in Latin literature and value interdisciplinary approaches and the dialogue with colleagues and students; they will be passionate representatives of Classics / Latin both within the university and beyond.
University teaching at Basel takes place in German. Sound knowledge of German is therefore indispensable, good knowledge of English, French and/or Italian desirable.
The Professorship of Latin and the Department of Ancient Civilizations offer a stimulating research environment in a friendly atmosphere. The post-holder will have an attractive office space with full access to the University's excellent infrastructure as well as the resources of the University Library and the departmental library, Bibliothek Altertumswissenschaften, a leading research library for the study of the ancient Mediterranean cultures and Graeco-Roman literature. The Department is a centre of international exchange (e.g. through the Basel Fellowships in Latin Literature). Located in the heart of the historical city centre of Basel, it is very easily accessible by public transport.
The successful candidate will be offered an attractive remuneration package (salary, social benefits) in accordance with the guidelines of the University of Basel, with access to the University's rich programme of Continuing Education, Language Teaching and University Sports.
