Offer Description

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.

The Department of Environmental Toxicology (Utox ) has an opening for a

Postdoctoral Position in Behavioral Neurotoxicology (m/f/d)

Project background

Chemical pollutants in the environment have the potential to interact with the nervous system, thereby affecting the behavior and neurophysiology of an organism. In the aquatic environment, such neuroactive chemicals are omnipresent and pose a potential threat to aquatic organisms including fish. However, there is still a lack of understanding of how neuroactive chemicals influence the behavior of fish and interact with neural circuits controlling a wide variety of bodily functions.

Project description

In this project, the Postdoctoral scientist will use the zebrafish model to investigate chemically induced behavioral phenotypes. The candidate will specifically tackle the neuronal mechanisms, encompassing sensory modalities as well as central and peripheral circuits that underlie chemically induced behavioral phenotypes and associated bodily responses. To this end, behavioral analysis, state-of-the-art imaging methods, as well as loss- and gain-of-function approaches, will be applied. The project runs initially for two years and the starting date is as soon as possible upon agreement.

The Postdoctoral candidate should hold a PhD in life sciences or environmental science with expertise in neuroscience, neurotoxicology, toxicology, pharmacology or similar. A strong interest in environmental toxicology and experience in working with the zebrafish model, imaging, behavioral and neural circuit analysis as well as computational and data analysis skills will be a benefit. Independence, critical thinking, curiosity, solid work ethics, mature teamwork attitude and good English skills are essential for this project.
