Postdoctoral Fellowship in Social Anthropology (60%)

The incoming Chair of Anthropology at the University of Basel, Switzerland, Prof. Dr. George Paul Meiu, is searching for a postdoctoral fellow with a strong training in-and innovative ideas for-the theory and methods of socio-cultural anthropology. Candidates' research and teaching should focus on either (a) the political economy of anthropological knowledge production; or (b) ethnographically imaginative ways to think of intimacy, commodity, the body, and/or mobility in the contemporary world order. A regional focus on Africa is preferred, but candidates working on these topics in Eastern Europe or Latin America will also be considered. This position is part of a new initiative at the University of Basel's Institute of Social Anthropology that foregrounds public engagement through ethnographic imagination.

The successful candidate's appointment should begin on August 1, 2022 (with teaching duties starting on September 19, 2022).

• Participate in research groups, collaborate on research projects, and contribute to publications
• Help advance the Institute's public engagement initiative, by assisting to the production of a podcast and/or field schools
• Teach two hours per week during the semester at the BA- and MA-level
• Mentor BA and MA students and supervise examinations
• Help with limited administrative tasks, as needed

• PhD in socio-cultural anthropology or related field
• Experience carrying out ethnographic field research
• Teaching experience to support the Institute's and MA students' research
• Fluency in spoken and written English
• Ability to teach in German at the BA-level is strongly preferred
