Offer Description

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

The Laboratory of Advanced Material Processing (AMP) is a multidisciplinary research unit that develops innovative functional modification of materials by beam (e.g. laser light, electrons) and plasma induced processing. LAMP provides full cycle technology development, starting from novel materials, deep understanding of the background physics of beam-matter interactions, development of automated AI/Ml systems for novel materials processing and quality insurance. The lab combines additive manufacturing, large scale laser micro-processing, multiscale modelling and AI/ML for the quality monitoring/control, at the end offering to the society novel nanostructured materials, their shape-forming and integration into devices.

Postdoc's in computer science to develop AI/ML monitoring of laser processing

Your tasks
For three of our projects, funded by Innosuisse, the Swiss industrial innovation funding agency, we are looking for motivated Postdoc candidates to develop AI/ML for the automatization of quality monitoring/control in laser processing. Working in a close collaboration with the industrial partners, you will develop unique AI/ML algorithms for real-time detection of different physical phenomena in laser processing from the signals flow. You will design data adaptive quality control, realizing your ideas in novel AI/ML architectures. Acting in this interdisciplinary field you will merge AI/ML with the physics of the laser-matter interactions, while all your developments will be supported with multiple experimental runs on the real laser processing equipment. Your scientific activities will be carried out in a close collaboration with the specialists in material science, modelers of laser induced heat flow and laser physicists, allowing you the combination of complementary knowledge within unique AI/ML frameworks. During your activities, you will get access to unique data sets, cutting edge analytical tools/methods, computational facilities, photonic sources and modern industrial equipment. You will support our PhD students, publish in scientific journals, and participate in domestic/international conferences.

Your profile
We are searching for candidates having completed their PhD in computer science and/or mathematics. You are motivated and curious about the new AI/ML architectures, including physically informed ones. You are ready to discover the new horizons in laser processing and to bring your ideas in AI/ML to the technology level. You have a background in ML/AI, preferably with the knowledge in domains such as deep learning, reinforcement learning, knowledge transfer, self-supervised and online learning etc. The applications of AI/ML in automatic control and the understanding of the dynamic systems concepts is a plus, as well as a knowledge (on a conceptual level) of Bayesian probability. The basic understanding of sensors and laser processing is beneficial, but not obligatory. Excellent skills in both, verbal and written scientific communication in English are mandatory. Mastering German and/or French are helpful but not mandatory.

Our offer
Empa offers a stimulating research environment at its site in Thun, near Bern. You are proposed to work on the topic that is of utmost scientific and technological importance and novelty, with an easy access to the cutting edge research infrastructure and equipment. You will be a part of an experienced project team with national/international collaborations, which will give you a full multidisciplinary support in present work and will help to realize your scientific ideas and shape those within the lab activities. Additionally, you will be supported in production of world level top notch results, their publication in international peer reviewed journals, and in your personal development.

The positions are available with the starting dates in April-May 2024, initially for one year with the possibility of extension by one more year.

We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.

We look forward to receiving your complete online application including a letter of motivation, CV, certificates, diplomas and contact details of two reference persons. Please submit these exclusively via our job portal. Applications by e-mail and by post will not be considered.
