Postdoc Position in Tracer Hydrogeology and Modelling

Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.
The Department of Water Resources and Drinking Water (W+T) of Eawag and the Hydrogeology research group in the Department of Environmental Sciences of the University of Basel jointly invite applications for a Postdoc Position in Tracer Hydrogeology and Modelling.

Your position
The focus of the research project is the improvement of the conceptual and quantitative understanding of surface water-groundwater interactions via state-of-the-art tritium measurement techniques and integrated surface-subsurface hydrological modelling. The successful candidate will be tasked with the measurement and analysis of the spatial and temporal distribution of tritium in the river Rhine and in a large near-river groundwater wellfield in the vicinity of Basel, Switzerland, which is characterized by complex geology and where Rhine river water is used for managed aquifer recharge. The goal is to develop a combined tritium measurement and modelling method that allows the quantification of groundwater flow and mixing at near-river drinking water wellfields. Tritium measurements will be based on an improved and state-of-the-art ultra-low-level measurement technique that was developed at Eawag and which employs electrolytic enrichment of tritium in water samples followed by liquid scintillation counting. In addition to the methodological advances in the analyses of tritium, its decay product 3He and other noble gases, the successful candidate will conduct numerical flow and reactive transport simulations of the study site with an integrated surface-subsurface hydrological model and calibrate the models against hydraulic and tracer data.

Your profile
Applicants should hold (or be in the process of completing) a PhD in Hydrogeology, Environ-mental Sciences or Engineering, Physics, Geosciences, or a related field. Proficiency in English is required, and knowledge of German is an advantage. The ideal candidate is an intrinsically motivated, team-oriented but independently operating person dedicated to the interdisciplinary research needed to advance the under-standing of complex surface water-groundwater systems. The candidate should have strong analytical skills, solid knowledge of hydrogeological and hydrochemical processes, and both fieldwork and laboratory experi-ence. Knowledge of the application of hydrological tracers and numerical hydrological modelling is desired.

We offer you
The position will be in an interdisciplinary group of researchers in the fields of water resources and drinking water, hydrogeology and environmental tracers. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with authorities and drinking water managers. The position is available for a period of at least 24 months, starting in Fall 2022. Employment level is flexible between 80 and 100%. The position is based in Dübendorf (near Zurich) in the Tracer Hydrogeology group of Prof. Dr. Oliver Schilling in the department W+T and is affiliated both with the Environmental Isotopes group in W+T and the Hydrogeology research group in the Department of Environmental Sciences of the University of Basel.
Eawag is a modern employer and offers an excellent working environment where staff can contribute their strengths, experience and ways of thinking. We promote gender equality and are committed to staff diversity and inclusion. The compatibility of career and family is of central importance to us.
