Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

The construction industry's growing use of wood as an eco-friendly building material faces challenges due to increased demand and the impact of climate change. In response, a project funded by Innosuisse – the Swiss Innovation Agency – aims to support recyclable thermosets by developing a reworkable adhesive. Therefore, we are currently seeking a dynamic and motivated individual for a postdoctoral position in the field of wood (de-)bonding.

Your tasks

As a postdoc, you will lead the investigation into the on-demand debonding of composite materials, spanning wood, metals, and plastics among others. Beyond the core research, your role encompasses project management, including coordinating interdisciplinary teams, managing timelines, and ensuring milestone achievements. Your responsibilities extend to scientific publications, stake-holder communication, and continuous improvement, making this position dynamic and impactful.

Your profile

We are looking for a highly motivated, creative, and communicative individual capable of bridging expertise between materials science, chemistry, and wood technology. The ideal candidate holds a Ph.D. in materials science, chemistry, or a related field with a strong background in adhesive technology. While an interest in biomaterials, and wood technology is advantageous, it's not a strict requirement. We expect a track record of high-quality scientific publications and excellent communication and writing skills in English. Proficiency in German is beneficial.

Our offer

Join a dynamic, international team focused on data science and wood technology at our leading research institution in the Zurich area. Empa provides outstanding infrastructure and an interdisciplinary work environment that encourages collaboration and innovation. As a team member, you will gain access to numerous opportunities for professional development, networking, and collaboration with experts in the field. The initial contract is for two years, with the possibility of extension, starting from March 2024 or upon agreement.

We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
