Postdoc in the field of solid-state batteries

Updated: about 2 months ago

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

The

Laboratory for Thin Films and Photovoltaics

is internationally known for innovative research in the fields of thin-film photovoltaics, thin-film batteries, and printed electronics. Specifically,

thin-film solid-state batteries (SSBs)

are developed for powering wireless sensors or smart cards. A unique feature of thin-film SSBs is their fast charge-discharge capability that is commercially exploited by Empa start-up

BTRY AG

. At the same time, the thin-film geometry provides a versatile platform for exploring materials and interfacial phenomena that can be transferred to bulk batteries.

Your tasks

The postdoc will be part of a collaborative European project on Gen4 solid-state batteries, where our team is responsible for the characterization and validation of battery materials in relevant environments, including testing under extreme conditions such as low temperatures.

Your profile

  • PhD degree in physics, materials science, engineering, or a similar field obtained within the last 3 years
  • Hands-on experience with PVD methods (such as magnetron sputtering, evaporation, etc.) including their operation, maintenance and eventual upgrades
  • Hands-on experience with electrochemical and material characterization techniques is advantageous
  • High level of experimental skills and scientific creativity to design innovative experiments
  • You are a team player, and your strengths include taking personal responsibility
  • Willingness to co-supervise semester, master and PhD students
  • Proficient in English (written and spoken)

Our offer

We offer a postdoctoral position at the research institution with excellent infrastructure, broad interdisciplinary surroundings, and many possibilities for professional and personal development. You will be a member of a collaborative project with several academic and industry partners. The initial contract is for one year and can be extended up to 2 years. Starting date: May-June 2024 or upon mutual agreement.

We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
