Post-Doctoral position on the combustion dynamics of hydrogen-fired aircraft engines

Updated: 4 months ago
Job Type: Permanent

100%, Zurich, fixed-term

The Laboratory of Combustion and Acoustics for Power & Propulsion Systems (CAPS)  in the Department of Mechanical and Process Engineering invites applications for a Post Doctoral position on the combustion dynamics of hydrogen-fired aircraft engines.

Project background

The goal of this research is to investigate experimentally the flame dynamics in future hydrogen-fired aircraft combustors. These combustors will enable net CO2 reductions of future aircrafts of 75% compared to kerosene-powered aviation. The stability of the hydrogen flames must be ensured for a wide range of operating conditions. The development of these new combustors therefore necessitates significant research effort to explain the influence of the operating pressure on the combustion physics of these turbulent hydrogen flames.

Job description

This experimental research work aims at investigating the combustion dynamics of hydrogen flames for aircraft propulsion at relevant operating conditions. The combustion of liquid sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) will also be considered in the research  program. The research will be performed on a lab-scale, high-pressure test facility into which different combustors can be inserted. Acoustic and laser-based optical techniques will be used to experimentally identify the response of the hydrogen flames to acoustic excitation, as well as their hydrodynamic stability and NOx emissions. The research outcome will be published in specialized and broad-audience journals.

Your profile

You are expected to have a PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering with excellent track records in experimental research on turbulent reactive or non-reactive flows. Ideally, you have a demonstrated experience in both Planar Laser Induced Fluorescence and Particle Image Velocimetry. A strong background in experimental research for the study of hydrodynamic stability would also be an asset for this position.

We are looking for highly motivated, committed, and creative individuals, able to work in a team and with excellent communication skills. Working in a top-level research environment with advanced laboratory infrastructure, you will have a unique opportunity to develop your research abilities.
