he University of Applied Sciences and Arts of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) has opened a full-time position for a PostDoc Researcher in the area of machine learning for bioinformatics,at the Department of Innovative Technologies (DTI) based at the USI-SUPSI university campus in Lugano-Viganello (East Campus), within the Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence (IDSIA). The contract starts on April 1st, 2024 or date to be agreed.

Skills/Qualifications

You will carry out research activities within the framework of the European project NEXTGEN, in collaboration with an exceptional group composed of academic, medical, and industrial partners from all over Europe. We will develop a platform for the integration of multimodal data, with a focus on genomics, and their analysis using machine learning and data science methods for the development of personalized interventions in cardiac medicine. The approach will include the development of new federated machine learningtechniques to overcome limitations in transferring medical data outside the centers where they are collected and ensure patient privacy. The selected candidate will work on key AI methods for the curation of genomic data, prioritization of genomic variants, integration of multi-omic and multimodal data, as well as the extension of these methods to the context of federated learning.

Tasks

· Innovative research on federated machine learning applied to bioinformatics for the processing and integration of multimodal and multi-omic biomedical data.

· Experimental validation of methods and development of projects with medical professionals and biomedical researchers for their clinical or translational application.

· Contribution to the acquisition of grants for methodological and applied research projects.

Specific Requirements

Requirements

Technical background and skills

· Research experience in omics data analysis and in the application of machine learning/data science.

· PhD in machine learning, data science, bioinformatics, computational genomics, or related areas (obtained or near completion).

· Excellent programming skills with data science languages and libraries (R, Python).

· Strong mathematical skills.

· Good track record of publications.

 

Soft skills

· Very good communication skills in spoken and written English.

· Ability to work in a team and in a collaborative environment.

· Autonomy.

Desirable but not strictly required

· Experience in the field of genomic annotation and in the use of bioinformatics databases.

· Not necessary, but potentially advantageous, knowledge of the Italian language.
