Post-doc position on the development of novel MXenes

Updated: 2 months ago

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

The

Laboratory for Functional Polymers

is devoted to research and development at the forefront of novel organic materials, polymers and 2D materials with unique functional properties, designed to ena-ble future technologies.

For an ambitious internally funded project involving four different Empa laboratories, we are looking for a Postdoctoral researcher with background in liquid phase exfoliation of 2D materials. In the project, a material synthesis platform will be develop to boost and expand the Empa research efforts in the emerging class of 2D MXenes and to demonstrate their potential in selected application fields. The focus of your task will be on chemical etching and exfoliation routes from novel MAX phase precursors to realize MXenes with tailored properties. You will be working closely together with other team members that support materials selection with DFT calculations and AI supported models, synthesis of the pre-cursor MAX-phase, and a team specialized in advanced characterization techniques for 2D materials. To this extent, structure-property maps will be established to link the synthesis strategy to the final materials properties.

Good work structuring and coordination skills are required to elaborate within a collaborative research the key know-how, understanding and process chain. A creative mindset is sought, able to face the manifold project challenges and risks with innovative material and/or process approaches.

Your responsibilities

  • Research involving advanced etching and exfoliation strategies for MXenes from novel MAX phase precursors
  • Design and execute experimental plans for systematic process parameter studies
  • Development of appropriate synthesis setups and protocols to establish a reliable MXene synthesis platform
  • Identification and specification of material/process characteristics critical to the exfoliation, chemistry and property control of the final MXene materials
  • Publication of scientific results in peer-reviewed high-impact journals and dissemination at international conferences

Your profile

  • PhD in Materials science, physical chemistry or related disciplines
  • Experience with liquid phase exfoliation of 2D materials
  • Experience in the field of MXenes is a plus
  • Demonstrated aptitude for out-of-the box oriented thinking
  • Full proficiency in written and oral English
  • Self-motivated, open-minded and communicative attitude

Our offer

We offer a fully funded 20-months post-doc position at Empa to conduct cutting-edge research in a rapidly expanding research field with wide technological relevance. Applications are open immediately with an expected starting date of April 1st, 2024 or upon mutual agreement.

A very similar position is also available in the Building Energy Materials and Components Laboratory.

We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
