Post-doc position in the advanced processing of cathode battery materials

Updated: about 1 month ago

Materials science and technology are our passion. With our cutting-edge research, Empa's around 1,100 employees make essential contributions to the well-being of society for a future worth living. Empa is a research institution of the ETH Domain.

Empa's

Laboratory for High Performance Ceramics

is involved in the scientific research, development and characterization of advanced ceramics, composites and inorganic powder-based materials for structural and functional applications.

In this Innosuisse funded project, we aim together with our industrial partner and PSI at developing a high-yield, easily-scalable and sustainable synthesis process for the manufacturing of LNMXO cathode materials for rechargeable batteries, warranting high quality and industry relevant performance. To this extend, composition-structure-property maps will be established to link the synthesis strategy to the cathode performance properties. State of the art analytical techniques will be used to characterize the raw and final cathode materials. Hereby, synergistic effects between the raw materials and their processing conditions on the final cathode material characteristics and performance will be of particular relevance.

Advanced knowledge and record of accomplishment in the field of colloidal chemistry/processing and powder granulation will be required. Furthermore, good work structuring and coordination skills are required to develop the key know-how and process chain in this collaborative research project. A careful, meticulous and creative mindset will be appreciated in facing the manifold of project challenges and risks.

Your tasks

  • Structured cathode material development
  • Design and execution of experimental plans for systematic process parameters studies
  • Advanced characterization of precursors materials
  • Identification and specification of material/process characteristics critical to the final cathode material performance
  • Coordination with the project partners and preparation of regular project progress reports
  • In agreement with project partners, publication of results in high-impact journals

Your profile

  • PhD in Materials science, Ceramics or related disciplines
  • Demonstrated colloidal processing and powder transformation skills
  • Demonstrated aptitude for out-of-the box target oriented thinking
  • Full proficiency in written and oral English
  • Self-motivated, open-minded and communicative attitude

Our offer

We offer a fully funded 2 years post-doc position at Empa to conduct cutting-edge research in a rapidly expanding research field with wide technological relevance. Applications are open immediately with an expected starting date of April 1st, 2024 or upon mutual agreement.

We live a culture of inclusion and respect. We welcome all people who are interested in innovative, sustainable and meaningful activities - that's what counts.
