is the modular research and innovation building of Empa and Eawag where new technologies and materials can get developed and tested under real conditions. In our

Concrete and Asphalt Lab

, we focus on fundamental and application-oriented research as well as on product development in the field of cementitious and bituminous materials, with a special focus on sustainability of these materials.


Your tasks


You will work on a cutting-edge, applied science project devoted to development and characterization of novel concretes with reduced CO2 emissions. With support of our senior scientists and lab technicians experienced in cement chemistry and concrete technology, you will carry out research on the novel concretes: mix design, mechanical properties development, durability assessment. Your research activities will yield new concrete formulations; in parallel you will coordinate the implementation of the newly developed materials and technologies into the new NEST Unit:

Beyond Zero

. With the new NEST unit we will demonstrate how the building and construction industry can contribute to the low-emissions future.


Your profile


  • A PhD degree in Civil Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field; 
  • Experience in concrete technology research is required; 
  • Multidisciplinary project management skills, able to deliver tangible results;
  • Full proficiency in English (scientific writing, communication with a multi-national team); 
  • Excellent communication skills, capability of coordinating tasks in the lab and in collaboration with external partners;
  • Open to new solutions in the construction sector, ready to learn new methods and materials;
  • Proficiency in German is not required but is an advantage. 

Our offer

We offer 2 years postdoc position starting in early 2024 or upon agreement. The outcomes of your work will get a chance of direct validation at Empa's NEST building. In this way, you will demonstrate the new perspective for the sustainable cement and concrete industry and effectively contribute to the struggle to reduce emissions and improve the sustainability of the built environment.
