The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research WSL is part of the ETH Domain. Approximately 600 people work on the sustainable use and protection of the environment and on the handling of natural hazards.
The Research Units Forest dynamics and Forest health and biotic interactions study the diversity of life in its various forms, from genetic diversity to the diversity of species and ecosystems as well as their interactions in forests. In collaboration with partners from inside and outside WSL such as federal, cantonal and local authorities, we elaborate scientific knowledge for management strategies for the conservation of biodiversity and the preservation of natural resources in Switzerland and internationally. The research teams forest dynamics and forest entomology are searching, for the duration of one year, starting in early autumn 2022 or by arrangement, for a
PostDoc in Enhancing habitat quality for biodiversity across ecosystem borders 80-100% (f/m/d)
In large areas of European forests, many habitats have disappeared, in particular rare and slowly evolving ones. Since many species depend on a variety of habitats during their life cycle, the availability of and access to them is a prerequisite for their existence. Of particular interest are species that rely on water during their life cycle, whether in the form of permanent or temporary water bodies. The relationships of various organisms to these and other specific habitats, i.e. water bodies or wet areas, tree-related microhabitats (TreMs) or tree crowns, and their interaction with the surrounding environment are yet not well understood in forests. The main task is to review the literature, focusing on the interface between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. We expect to contribute to build up capacities for subsequent projects and research activities.
You have a PhD in the field of ecological science and you are familiar with statistical analyses that relate temporal changes to environmental factors. You are motivated and skilled in writing scientific publications and are comfortable collaborating with colleagues from WSL and with stakeholders from outside the institute. Fluency in English is mandatory, while German is favorable.
Please send your complete application to Stefania Pe, Human Resources WSL, by uploading the requested documents through our webpage. Applications via email will not be considered. Frank Krumm, frank.krumm(at)wsl.ch and Martin Gossner, martin.gossner(at)wsl.ch, will be happy to answer any questions or offer further information. The WSL strives to increase the proportion of women in its employment, which is why qualified women are particularly called upon to apply for this position.
