Offer Description
Your responsibilities
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to work on the integration of the Barrel Timing Layer (BTL) detector for the Phase II upgrade of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment at CERN. The BTL is a novel detector that will use a sophisticated CO2 cooling system and Thermoelectric Coolers (TEC) for thermal management.
As Mechanical Engineer in charge of the BTL integration you will:
- Oversee and contribute to the integration of the BTL detector on the CERN Meyrin site. In particular, you will be responsible for the assembly and quality control of the detector mechanics, cooling infrastructure and mechanical interfaces to CMS.
- Be in charge of the any design changes or updates to the interfaces between the BTL and the rest of the CMS detector, including supporting mechanical elements, tooling, thermal interfaces and service channels. You will be responsible for the final engineering design of the interfaces, their validation with mock-ups, and the fabrication and quality control of the final structures.
- Coordinate the work of personnel at CERN, collaborate closely with senior mechanical and electrical engineers as well as researchers from collaborating institutions and with the CMS Technical Coordination team
- Facilitate the integration of colleagues from collaborating institutes who will join the Tracker integration effort at CERN - supervise CERN graduates and students.

About us
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.
