Offer Description

About us

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success.

Your responsibilities

We offer an opportunity to take part in the largest scientific experiment in the world. A unique early careers programme in a multicultural, multidisciplinary environment. It is an effort to uncover what the universe is made of and understand how it works. A path to develop the next generation of scientific, technical and administrative experts. Origin. Where your career begins. Take part!

The CARE (Cable Ageing REsearch) project is looking for a Materials Chemical Engineer skilled to deal with the following tasks:

  • To establish chemical tests procedures to characterize and qualify cables in terms of aging and radiation hardness.
  • To analyse chemical reaction processes due to radiation on cable polymers
  • To perform FTIR, TGA swelling tests on cables to qualify proposed cables by manufacturers in terms of aging and radiation hardness according CERN requirements.
  • To produce electrical, chemical and mechanical analysis on tests results obtained.
  • To define appropriate samples (bundles of cables, length, types of polymers, sensors, etc.) and identify the appropriate locations (according to cable stressors) for the samples in CERN facilities.
  • To establish and characterize the artificial irradiation campaigns related to cable samples in CERN facilities or in external collaborations.
  • To ensure and monitor the measurement accuracy of the cable stressors present in all cable samples locations.
  • To deposit, monitor, collect and manage all cable samples before lab testing and analyse.
  • To liaise with the Monitoring and Calculation Working Group (MCWG) for the definition of the expected radiation level exposure for cables, and with the Radiation to Materials (R2M) Work Package in R2E related to the irradiation of cable insulating materials in external facilities.
