Your mission :

The EPFL Swiss Plasma Center (SPC) is a major participant in the field of Fusion and Plasma Physics within the framework of the European Fusion Programme. Informatics play a key role in the operation of major plasma physics experiments such as the TCV tokamak and the TORPEX device, hosted at the SPC/EPFL. IT solutions provide hardware control, signal digitization, data processing, data storage, and access control. Joining the SPC IT team, you will take a central part in the most ambitious magnetic fusion scientific project in Switzerland. TCV has established many international collaborations and is recognized as a world leading experiment in controlled fusion.

Main duties and responsibilities include :

Working with physicists, engineers, students, and fellow IT colleagues, you will take part in the following tasks:


  • Development and maintenance of the IT framework governing the operation and plant control of TCV and TORPEX experiments, including state machines, device monitoring, hardware control, and system synchronization.
  • Selection, installation and operation of fast digitization systems for experimental measurements.
  • IT support and system integration for technical teams working on real time control, electronics, high-power engineering, and mechanical design.
  • Development and maintenance of scientific IT services including data storage and backups, data processing, user management, access control, network management, fleet management and monitoring.
  • Depending on the workload, like all members of the IT team, you will also provide some general IT support for SPC personnel.

Your profile :
  • We are looking for an IT enthusiast with a passion for science and technology.
  • Ideally you have an engineering or scientific degree, or equivalent experience.
  • You describe yourself as an IT-oriented electronician or scientist, or as an informatician with a strong interest for technology and science. 
  • Willing to work in a team and share responsibilities with colleagues, you are ready to pursue a diverse, challenging, and constantly evolving set of objectives driven by science in an international environment.
  • As a bonus, you are experienced in some of the following technologies: data acquisition systems (DTACQ, LABVIEW, ...), communication protocols (OPC-UA, MODBUS, ETHERCAT, ...), real-time control (SIMULINK, MARTe, ...), system control and integration frameworks (EPICS, VSYSTEM,…), database management, system administration (mostly linux).
