The Geneva Academy is a leading international institution dedicated to education, academic legal research and policy studies. Jointly established in 2007 by the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, the Geneva Academy has expanded its activities and outreach while building a dynamic research agenda. With staff from around the world, the Geneva Academy carries out independent and rigorous academic legal research and policy studies. It analyses current and critical issues in international humanitarian law, international human rights law, international criminal law and transitional justice whilst collaborating and engaging with governments, universities, international organizations and civil society.

The Head of Research and Policy Studies is part of the Geneva Academy’s Executive Committee. Reporting to the Director, the Head of Research and Policy Studies will be responsible for:

Main duties :

  • Strategic development and implementation of academic legal research and policy studies and related management and coordination.
    • Develop and support the Geneva Academy’s strategy on research and policy studies;
    • Manage and follow up the implementation of the Geneva Academy’s work on research and policy studies, with the support of the administrative and finance team and in collaboration with the Executive Director;
    • Supervise the Researcher’s team;
    • Ensure the publication of high-quality and academically rigorous research outputs.
  • Fundraising
    • Develop and implement a fundraising strategy;
    • Initiate, prepare and supervise funding applications to States, institutions or private donors.
  • Knowledge-transfer
    • Develop and coordinate the Geneva Academy’s pool of experts in international humanitarian law to enhance internal capacities;
    • Develop customized trainings in the field of international humanitarian law, human rights and international criminal law;
    • Strengthen synergies between policy research and education programmes conducted at the Geneva Academy.
  • Outreach
    • Maintain and develop networks with the Geneva Academy’s partners (including international and regional intergovernmental organizations, and non-governmental organizations) and
    • Organize different types of events and expert meetings in relation to research activities and policy studies.

Candidate’s profile:

  • PhD in international law, preferably with a specialization in international humanitarian law, human rights law and/or international criminal law, a real asset. Persons who do not hold a PhD but a masters’ degree and who have a track record of publications in the above areas may also apply;
  • Proven experience in the field of research in international law;
  • Capacities in fundraising and management of research team;
  • Excellent writing skills in English (French and German would be an important asset);
  • Excellent communication skills.
