ETH Zurich plays a leading role at the international level in incorporating its commitment to sustainability into its education, research, and operations. The Office of the President is seeking an outstanding, passionate individual to lead ETH Sustainability. The team is responsible to coordinate a portfolio of programmes, projects and initiatives which are on-going across the University. The team is also constantly working to improve and develop new ones.


Job description

As the head of ETH Sustainability, you will be responsible for helping ETH Zurich turn its institutional sustainability mission into practical reality. You provide thought leadership across the institution to inspire the ETH community and external partners and ensure the necessary appreciation of sustainability issues. Using your deep understanding of sustainability related themes and topics, combined with technology insight, you lead a team of highly motivated professionals with specialist sustainability knowledge and skills, responsible for driving and championing programmes, and projects. You connect the numerous internal actors and diverse sustainability initiatives, also with external partners. You make sure that your team remains focused, partners with other teams, staff units, departments, and competence centres. You live and drive a performance culture by acting as a leader and role model to focus on timely delivery and impact of ETH Zurich’s sustainability measures.


Your profile
  • Experienced team and project leader working in a sustainability role for a university, NGO, international company, consultancy/advisory or equivalent
  • Deep understanding and both global and local overview of emergent themes, topics, and technologies
  • Good knowledge of innovation programmes in a university/corporate setting with Swiss and international governmental players, national/international venture funds and/or funding schemes for sustainability (Breakthrough Energy, Climate-KIC etc.)
  • High degree of curiosity and self initiative with can-do and no-box thinking attitude
  • Doctorate or Master's degree with focus on quantitative methods (preferably natural sciences or engineering sciences); ideally a further degree in sustainability or equivalent
  • Excellent German and English language skills and the ability to craft compelling copy and narratives and distill complex topics into engaging deliverables
