Introduction

Are you an experienced Software Engineer who enjoys Full-Stack Web Application Development and UX/UI design?

Take an active role in software development, service operation and project management for CERN's Event Management tool (Indico) by joining the core development team at CERN and help shape its future UX/UI experience, while collaborating with contributors world-wide including the UN, MPI and many others!

You'll join a dynamic team using cutting edge web technologies, in a large Open-Source project used by hundreds of thousands of users world-wide, to organise anything from small meetings to conferences with thousands of participants.

The Collaborative Applications (CA) Group is responsible for delivering software and services enabling collaborative work, including conferencing and communication tools, Open Science and institutional repositories technology. Indico is developed and operated by the Conferencing Technology (CTE) section of CA Group.

Functions

You will join the Indico team as an experienced member, and become a key player towards making the Indico service at CERN (https://indico.cern.ch/ ) more modern, by improving the underlying Indico open-source software (https://getindico .io/).

You will be responsible for:

  • Leading and contributing to the redesign and development of Indico’s new UX/UI, better supporting devices such as mobile phones and tablets;
  • Management of Open-Source code contributions on GitHub (including code reviews), both from inside and outside CERN;
  • In collaboration with the UN and other Indico contributors, taking over the management of the ongoing accessibility overhaul, and ensuring its continuation;
  • Developing cross-integration between Indico and multimedia services (video conferencing, Web Lectures, Webcast), and CERN's institutional repositories (CDS/InvenioRDM) with the goal of enhancing usability as well as Open Science and FAIR capabilities (Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability, and Reuse of digital assets);
  • Acting as backup service manager for the Indico service and sharing project management tasks with the Indico Project Manager;
  • Mentoring and/or supervising junior team members.

Skills/Qualifications

Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of software engineering or a related field.

Experience:

  • A track record of making significant contributions to Open-Source projects (preferably using Git); maintaining such projects is a plus;
  • Proven experience working on large software projects, preferably for the web, involving design and development of user interfaces, web application back-ends and front-ends;
  • Experience with web frontend technologies, in particular React and SASS/SCSS;
  • Familiarity with RESTful Web APIs is a plus;
  • Previous experience with user relations, user support, and user requirements definition is a plus;
  • Previous experience in service deployment, configuration management and operation is a plus.

Technical competencies:

  • Knowledge of programming techniques and languages: very advanced knowledge of Python, JavaScript and React programming; practical knowledge of Open-Source development is a plus; knowledge of the Flask web framework is also a plus.
  • Conceptualising, designing and developing user experiences and interfaces: good knowledge of web UI technologies such as SASS, React, Progressive Web Apps and Responsive Web Design; Knowledge of User Experience, Usability practices and Accessibility best-practices is a plus.
  • Design of databases/repositories: knowledge of Database Management Systems (PostgreSQL in particular) and Object-Relational Mappers (SQLAlchemy in particular).
  • Knowledge of system configuration tools: knowledge of virtual server deployment configuration platforms (OpenStack, puppet) and containers (Docker, OpenShift) is a plus.
  • Project management: practical knowledge of managing and executing software development projects is a plus.

Language skills:

Good knowledge of English: ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations. Basic knowledge of French or an undertaking to acquire it.

Contract type: Limited duration contract (2 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.
