Flow Cytometry Specialist

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich) Flow Cytometry Core Facility, located in Zurich, Switzerland, is currently seeking Flow Cytometrist and Cell Sorter Operator.


Project background

The ETH Zurich Flow Cytometry Core Facility, a part of the ETH Phenomics Center (EPIC), provides flow cytometry-based services such as multi-parameter analysis and cell sorting, flow cytometry training and support in designing and analysis of experiments to all ETH Zurich investigators and the local scientific community.

Currently, our facility is equipped with 2 high-speed cell sorters (BD FACS AriaIII and Aria Fusion, and 3 flow cytometry analysers (BD LSRFortessa, Cytek Aurora and BD Accuri C6) and a Seahorse XFe 96 metabolic function analyser. We also have access to the BC MoFlo Astrios EQ cell sorter.


Job description
  • Perform operation, QC and maintenance of high-speed cell sorters and flow cytometry analyzers
  • Employing a broad range of flow cytometric techniques
  • Support and train end-users in experimental design and instrument operation
  • Assist investigators with data analysis using various software packages
  • Identify problems, perform troubleshooting of system failures and interact with external technical support or repair personnel
  • Participate in developing new flow cytometry protocols and techniques
  • Continue to develop your own theoretical and practical knowledge in the field to increase the quality of service
  • Perform general lab organizational and administrative tasks

Your profile
  • BSc or MSc in biological sciences or a related subject, or relevant technical degree
  • Practical and theoretical knowledge of flow cytometers and fluorescence properties with the ability to assist clients in the design and troubleshooting of flow cytometry experiments.
  • Minimum 3 years of hands-on flow cytometry experience is essential, experience in high-speed cell sorting on BD FACSAriaIII and BC MoFlo Astrios cell sorters would be of advantage
  • Knowledge of at least two of the common flow cytometry analysis packages (FACSDiva, FlowJo, FCS Express…)
  • Research lab experience, including tissue culture and sample preparation
  • Excellent collaborative and interpersonal skills to interact with a broad range of individuals
  • Interest in becoming part of a technology platform (service-oriented)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, flexibility
  • Effective organizational skills and ability to prioritize tasks
  • Fluency in English, working knowledge of German would be a plus
  • High commitment, sense of initiative, open-mindedness and attention to details
