Our team works at the intersection of law and data science. We collect and analyze legal data in transdisciplinary research projects.
The Center for Legal Data Science (CLDS) is an interdisciplinary research hub at the Law Faculty of the University of Zurich. The core task of the CLDS is the application, critical reflection and promotion of data science methods in national and international legal contexts. The CLDS pursues the following high-level goals:
  • advancing legal knowledge and legal knowledge production through the application of quantitative methods,
  • enhancing the transparency of the law and legal procedures through the application of quantitative methods,
  • facilitating interdisciplinary legal research and teaching involving quantitative methods, on a national and international level

Your responsibilities
We are looking for a master student or someone holding a master degree who will support our team in carrying out quantitative analyses, in programming interfaces for the coding process, and in supervising human coders. Furthermore, the data scientist will assist in statistical consulting and lead in-house introductory courses on Data Science.
Your profile
  • Bachelor (and ongoing master studies) or Master degree in Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Computer Linguistics, Applied Mathematics, or Economics
  • knowledge of ML and NLP is an asset
  • good knowledge of R and/or Python is required
  • good knowledge of Statistics is required
  • interest in interdisciplinary research (Legal Data Science)
  • good written and oral knowledge of English
  • knowledge of German and experience with empirical projects would be an asset
