Calorimeter detector physicist (EP-ADE-CA-2021-104-LD)

Updated: over 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 28 Sep 2021

Introduction

As an applied physicist specialised in particle detectors, you will join the Experimental Physics (EP) department, specifically the CERN Detector Group of the ATLAS experiment, a general purpose detector exploiting the unique physics potential of the LHC’s new energy domain.

The Calorimeter section of the Detector Group has a leading role in the operation of the Liquid Argon (LAr) Calorimeter, the commissioning of its Phase-1 upgrade as well as new construction efforts for HL-LHC. CERN, Take part!

Specifically, the responsibilities within the LAr calorimeter project of ATLAS, mainly are:

  • The installation and commissioning of the LAr Calorimeter with its legacy precision electronics as well as the new Phase-1 upgrade electronics.
  • The operation of the LAr calorimeter, specially its electronics and associated software and firmware, with new components leading into the Hardware First Level Trigger for ATLAS during Run-3.
  • The on-site preparations for the Phase-2 Upgrade of the LAr electronics at CERN as host lab and in the ATLAS cavern.

Functions

You will:

  • Take a leading role in the commissioning and operation of the LAr calorimeter. This includes the supervision of a CERN based team of technicians, students and scientists covering all aspects of the LAr calorimeter operation.
  • Coordinate the efforts at CERN for all tests, including reception of deliverables and system tests, needed for the construction of the new LAr electronics for HL-LHC assisting the LAr community at large.
  • Contribute to the simulation, design and development efforts in the context of CERN's R&D activities related to Calorimeters for future detectors.

In due time you will be one of the leading physicists within the team for the installation, commissioning and operation of the upgraded LAr Calorimeter.
