a Scientist or a PostDoc (80-100%), responsible for the sustainability assessment of new production pathways for synthetic fuels

for aircrafts in the frame of the PSI/Empa-project "SynFuels", co-funded by the ETH domain.

The position is to be filled as soon as possible.

Your Tasks

The "SynFuels" project aims to make an important contribution towards a mobility without fossil fuels. Over the period 2021 to 2023, the two Swiss research institutes PSI and Empa jointly search for practical ways of linking carbon dioxide and hydrogen to form longer-chain molecules and thus produce synthetic fuels. The open position will involve the assessment of the sustainability of the technological developments taking place in the technical work packages by using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). For this, you will further develop the LCA method to improve existing screening and up-scaling options and be involved in Life cycle cost analysis as well as the evaluation & benchmarking against alternative technologies in close collaboration with the scientists from PSI and Empa involved in this project. 

Your profile

  • Master Degree or PhD in environmental/natural sciences or engineering
  • Experience with life cycle assessment methods and/or material flow analysis
  • Preferably first experiences in any of the following areas: mobility, chemical synthesis, life cycle costing
  • Experience in scientific writing and publishing
  • Excellent communication skills and fluency in English (both written and oral)
  • Basic skills in German and/or French

The position is limited to 2 years, with the option of further extension.
