Duties/Project description
The aim of this project is to analyse new high-quality genome assemblies from a number of fungal species to annotate and describe a novel type of transposable element, known as Starships. The candidate will generate and employ custom bioinformatic tools to identify the elements, and run existing pipelines to analyse their gene content. The candidate will also evaluate the evolutionary history of the elements, including signatures of horizontal gene transfer, through the use of phylogenetics and phylogenomics. Additionally, the candidate will produce a database of known elements that can be hosted on a public server. At the end of the project, the candidate is expected to compose at least one manuscript intended for publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
