Researcher position in Solid Mechanics (PA2022/1965)

Updated: almost 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 27 Jun 2022

Subject description
The Division of Solid Mechanics has a strong activity using x-ray and neutron tomography for materials research, including at the 4D Imaging Lab, based within the division, and at international synchrotron and neutron facilities, including MAXIV in Lund. In this context the division supports users at the 4D Imaging Lab and has many local, national and international collaborations around the use of x-ray and neutron tomography to explore the microstructure and processes in a diverse range of materials, from food to metals. The division is also part of the collaborative “QIM” project with DTU and UCPH (www.qim.dk) focused on quantitative analysis of 3D and 4D image data that aims to support users in the extraction of information from their tomography images.

Work duties
The position involves developing and supporting research using x-ray/neutron tomography and in 3D image analysis plus supporting collaborators at the 4D Imaging Lab and within the QIM project plus developing collaborations with and around large scale x-ray and neutron facilities such as MAXIV and ESS.

The main task is to focus on research using x-ray and neutron tomography and user/collaborator support. Participation in teaching and other departmental work is encouraged, e.g., supervision at the undergraduate level, advanced level and postgraduate level, as well as specialized training relating to the subject. The tasks also include taking an active part in interacting with external stakeholders, both within and outside academia, as well as participating in research projects within the wider network. In addition, you are expected to participate in the daily departmental work.

Qualification requirements
You must have a PhD in a physics, engineering, computer science, image analysis or related discipline and have experience in research areas relevant to the project. In particular, you must have significant practical experience in x-ray and neutron tomography and 3D/4D image analysis. You must also have experience in supporting users/collaborators and in developing collaborations with external parties. The applicant must be able to express themselves well in English (both in writing and orally). Since you are expected to participate in research projects where Swedish is the main language, a very good knowledge of both Swedish and English is a benefit. The ability to work both independently and as part of a team is of great importance.

You must also have experience in the following areas:

  • X-ray and neutron tomography for materials applications
  • 3D image analysis and visualization.
  • English presentation ability in speech and writing.
  • Independent work in projects together with other researchers and research groups.
  • User support and training
  • Development of collaborations
  • English presentation ability in speech and writing.

The assessment of the applicants will be based on research and technical skills within the subject, including skills and experiences in the application of x-ray/neutron tomography and 3D image analysis to address material research questions.

The following shall form the assessment criteria:

  • A good ability to develop and conduct high quality research.
  • Experience in x-ray/neutron tomography and 3D image analysis for materials applications
  • Good communication skills.

Other qualifications

The following areas will be considered as additional merits:

  • Knowledge of tomographic reconstruction.
  • Experience in "in-situ" experiments with x-rays and neutrons.
  • Experience in developing data analysis algorithms.
  • Scientific programming expertise for image analysis in one or more of the following languages: Python, MATLAB, C / C ++, Fortran.
  • Experience of experiments at international synchrotron and neutron facilities.
  • Experience in education / teaching.
  • Experience in developing external collaborations and user support
  • Knowledge in Swedish.

We will place great emphasis on personal suitability. The evaluation will take into account factors such as problem solving ability, analytical ability, collaboration skills and ability to take initiatives. Communication skills and ability to work independently, as well as to establish and maintain collaborations, will also be evaluated.

Terms of employment
This is a full-time, fixed-term employment of a maximum of 2 years.

Instructions for the application
The application should contain a personal letter stating why you are interested in the position and in what way the position matches your interests, your educational background and you previous experience. The application must also contain a CV, diploma or equivalent and other information that you wish to invoke (copies of grades, information on references, letters of recommendation etc.).
