Research Specialist in Pediatric Tumor Biology

Updated: about 2 months ago

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

The Arsenian Henriksson Lab conducts research on the MYC family of oncoproteins and network, to uncover their contribution to tumorigenesis, differentiation, metabolism, and apoptosis in different types of cancer. We are a multicultural and dynamic group with many national and international collaborators.

Description of the subject area

The research program in our group is focused on understating the role of MYC family of oncogenes in the biology and therapy of childhood tumors including neuroblastoma, medulloblastoma, and sarcoma. One part is focused on uncovering how MYC oncoproteins regulate several biological processes such as metabolic reprograming, cell differentiation, cell proliferation and death. Another major theme of the research is focused on assessing the therapeutic potential of MYC as well as down-stream effector proteins in these tumors by pharmacological approach utilizing small molecule inhibitors. Furthermore, the Arsenian-Henriksson’s Lab is interesting in understating the development and cell of origin of neuroblastoma using induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSCs) models. Thus, the project will include experiments to be carried out on human cancer cell lines, hiPSCs, and animal models of neuroblastoma, medulloblastoma and sarcoma.

Your mission

We are looking for a motivated, skilled and committed researcher to take part in several projects in childhood cancer. The employment will focus on how MYC/N regulates gene expression programs that are essential for tumor development and resistance to therapy, as well as using hiPSCs to model neuroblastoma development. The researcher is expected to have a leading role in experimental design, experimental performance, data analysis and representation, and presentation/publication of the results. The successful candidate will also help to write scientific articles and grant applications, and to supervise Bachelor and Master students.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

In addition to the aforementioned requirements, the candidate must be well familiar with standard molecular and cell biology techniques including:

  • Experimental planning
  • Cultivation of human cell lines and hiPSC
  • Gene expression analysis
  • Chromatin immunoprecipitation
  • Flow cytometry
  • Immunofluorescence
  • Western blotting
  • Protein-protein interactions
  • Confocal microscopy
  • Gene knockdown and knockout using inducible lentivirus and CRISPR/Cas 9 systems

Fluency in English and good presentation of research data is also requirements.

Assessment criteria

We are looking for a highly motivated researcher in the field of tumor biology to complement and expand ongoing research themes, as well as participate in teaching process at the department. Great emphasis is placed on personal suitability, in particular the ability to work independently and take responsibility as well as work in a group by being responsive and spreading creativity and positive energy.

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown:

  • PhD in tumor biology with postdoctoral research experience.
  • Documented research experience in gene regulation and epigenetics with first and/or last authorship publications in peer reviewed Journals.
  • Experience in grants writing and acquisition of research funding.
  • Student teaching and supervision at the bachelor and master levels.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown:

  • Supervision of PhD student – main or co-supervisor.
  • Experience in working with human induced pluripotent stem cells is considered as advantage.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
