Department
The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 90 persons are employed at the Department and approximately 1000 students are enrolled every academic year. Courses offered include undergraduate and post-graduate courses, as well as a Ph. D. programme. For more information, visit www.pcr.uu.se.

UCDP
The Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) has recorded ongoing violent conflicts since the 1970s. The data provided is one of the most accurate and well-used data-sources on global armed conflicts and its definition of armed conflict is becoming a standard in how conflicts are systematically defined and studied.

The department and UCDP are now looking for a research assistant, for a full-time position for 4 months, starting September 2, 2024.

The most significant task will be to collect and code information on organized violence, mainly in Ukraine. Specifically related to Ukraine, this means finding and critically reviewing new sources, going through large amounts of material and assessing it against UCDP's definitions and criteria and, finally, extracting relevant information and entering it into UCDP's coding system, where it will also be geocoded, i.e. get geographic coordinates according to a predetermined system. Another task will be to update texts in the program's encyclopedia. Other tasks may be added based on the needs of the program.

Requirements

Applicants must have:

  • Bachelor's degree in peace and conflict studies
  • Good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
  • Very good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
  • Documented experience of working with conflict data (coding/data management)
  • Documented good knowledge of the war in Ukraine
  • Previous experience with geocoding
  • Excellent knowledge of English (written and spoken)
  • Documented ability to work independently

Weight will be given to personal suitability.
