Research assistant
The Department of Peace and Conflict Research was established in 1971 to conduct peace research and offer courses in peace and conflict studies. Currently approx. 90 persons are employed at the Department and approximately 1000 students are enrolled every academic year. Uppsala Conflict Data Program (UCDP) at Uppsala University is the world's leading provider of data on organized violence, and the program is a unique source of information about conflicts worldwide and has been at the Department since the 1980s. The Department of Peace and Conflict Research and UCDP is now looking for a full-time research assistant for a temporary position (12 months), starting in June 2024.

Duties
The tasks consist of collecting and coding information on organized violence from selected, mainly Spanish-speaking, sources into the UCDP database, with a special focus on Latin America, especially Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela. Text writing in English, as well as basic data management, will also be included in the tasks. The work follows the fixed coding rules and conceptualizations of the UCDP, and is made in a small group, where a high degree of independent analytical capacity is expected. Other tasks may also be included depending on UCDP needs.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree in peace and conflict studies, or other relevant field
  • Good knowledge of political violence and theories of peace and conflict
  • Good knowledge of UCDP and its definitions
  • Good knowledge of organized violence in Latin America, especially Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela
  • Documented experience of working with conflict data (coding/data management)
  • Very good English in speech and writing
  • Very good Spanish skills in speech and writing
  • Good analytical skills
  • Good ability to work independently
  • Good ability to collaborate.

Additional qualifications:

  • Experience of coding organized violence, especially Colombia, Mexico and Venezuela.

About the employment
The employment is a: temporary position, 12 months. Scope of employment: 100%/full-time. Starting date: 3 June 2024, or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala.
