Research assistant in naive stem cell biology and development

Updated: about 1 month ago

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Developmental and Translational Neurobiology research group, headed by Dr. Cristiana Cruceanu, studies molecular mechanisms of environmental exposures shaping early human development. The overarching aim is to understand the long-term outcomes of these exposures on neurodevelopmental disorders and mental health. We use state-of-the-art in-vitro cell culture models of the brain and placenta. The exposures at the forefront of our interest are stress hormones, psychotropic medications, and inflammatory agents, given their interconnected mechanisms of action and relevance in neuropsychiatric phenotypes. Our work aims to improve our understanding of prenatal exposures and inform treatment decisions for stress-related disorders among pregnant women with evidence about the likely outcomes in their developing children. The Cruceanu lab is part of the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Karolinska Institute, located at the Biomedicum, an interdisciplinary research center designed to concentrate the world-class experimental research conducted at Karolinska Institutet Campus Solna.

Your mission

We are currently looking to recruit a Research Assistant to develop novel brain and placenta modelling systems that rely on naïve embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells. These in-vitro tools will be used for exposure assays whereby we assess the impact of psychotropic medications and stress hormones on tissue development and function.

Your profile

Suitable candidates must have significant experience working with embryonic and induced pluripotent stem cells, and ideally experience with naïve stem cell reprogramming, culture and manipulation. Experience with advanced cell culture systems like organoids, immunofluorescence protein labelling and confocal microscopy, as well as quantitative PCR and western blotting will be considered favourably. Successful applicants will have the opportunity to work in a stimulating and collaborative environment with state-of-the-art infrastructure.

Qualified to be employed as a research assistant is one who has obtained an MSc in molecular biology, neuroscience, psychology, pharmacology, or a related field.

Fluent written and spoken English is required. Above all, we will evaluate highly the ability of the candidate to work independently and creatively while also being a team player who can collaborate and contribute positively to various ongoing projects. The Cruceanu laboratory is strongly committed to equity, diversity, and inclusiveness, and individuals from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
