- with focus on research
Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet is engaged in research and education in the fields of infection biology, cancer biology, cell biology and immunology. Within the field of immunology, dysregulation of immune cells in diseases such as immunodeficiency and cancer has been identified as important areas of investigation to complement current research at the Department.
Work description
The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) has long track record of studying diseases of the immune system such as cancer, infections and acquired and inborn immunodeficiency diseases, with a specific focus on molecular studies of immune cells. The department’s researchers have made numerous contributions to the current understanding of immune dysfunction in disease and have been successful in attracting long-term research funding. This has resulted in advances in our understanding of how specific gene defects cause immune dysregulation and helped elucidate the role of the unmutated gene product in our physiology including system homeostasis. Studies of genetic immune disorders have identified specific functions and molecular pathways of immune cells that may help eradicate cancer and identify new therapeutic targets.
Your mission
You will mainly work with research and education within the areas of immunology and cancer, focusing on a molecular understanding of immune cell dysfunction in diseases. You will be expected to strengthen this arm of the department’s research using both patient samples and animal models, and state of the art methods for immunology research. You will contribute to teaching in post-graduate, graduate, and undergraduate education, via organisation of classroom and laboratory teaching, development of curriculum and assessment methods.
You must have substantial ongoing funding through grants obtained in competition, and you are expected to pursue research at such a level that future adequate funding is obtained.
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated good pedagogical expertise and excellent scientific expertise (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).
The department seeks to recruit a person with a well-documented and internationally recognized research profile and with strong teaching qualifications within the field of experimental immunology. Applicants should have a solid track record as a basic research investigator in immunology with a clear focus on cell and molecular approaches to investigate diseases of the immune system, including immunodeficiency diseases and cancer.
The successful candidate is expected to employ state of the art methods such as advanced flow cytometry, high resolution microscopy, gene editing, Omics approaches, and work with both primary human cells and complex murine models.
We are looking for a candidate who works in a global setting with a proven capacity to collaborate nationally and internationally, and who has an excellent track record in mentoring group members.
Experience in the organization of courses and educational programs at doctoral or postgrad level is expected. Experience of individual supervision of degree projects, doctoral students and postdoctoral fellows is also required. Since the position includes duties as an examiner of courses in the Swedish language, excellent spoken and written Swedish is a prerequisite.
Assessment criteria
The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific expertise (3), pedagogical expertise (2) and leadership, development, and collaboration expertise (2).
For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure 3.1.1 are applied in relation to established profile of employment.
Expertise in the areas of molecular biology, cell biology and immune cell regulation are particularly advantageous. It is particularly meritorious if the applicant is working in an international context for sharing patient samples and experimental models, expertise, and for student exchange. Combined studies of patient cells and experimental models for immunodeficiency diseases is an advantage, as is the application of a wide range of molecular and cell biology methods to study immune cell function. Particularly meritoriouswill be a proven track-record in collaborating with clinicians, as well as to have a well-established national and international involvement in the field. Education in, and experience from, academic leadership is meritorious.
Extensive pedagogical experience from various forms of teaching at undergraduate, advanced level and postgraduate level is meritorious. It is commendable if the applicant currently has or has had responsibility for student assessment.
The applicant shall also have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education (or have equivalent competence), as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If the person appointed for the position is lacking such education at the time of the employment, the appointee must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will identify the candidate who is best suited to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
