Offer Description

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Neuroscience includes several research groups working on different aspects of nervous system function, both under normal conditions and in various disease states. Research projects include a broad range of studies on the molecular and cellular levels, networks of neurons, and the organization of the nervous system as a whole. The Department has a flat organization with 40 research group leaders, of which 24 are full professors, and 65 PhD students.

Teaching represents a fundamental activity at the Department, which participates in several undergraduate courses and postgraduate education programs. Each year approximately 15 students receive their PhD from our Department and many of our graduates have gone onto distinguished careers in the academic or private sector.

Division

Join our dynamic and cutting-edge Santini-Laboratory at the Department of Neuroscience, Karolinska Institute. Our team is at the forefront of preclinical research, focusing on the physiology of the basal ganglia and its intricate role in shaping behavior. Comprising a team of dedicated scientists, we are committed to advancing our understanding of neurophysiological mechanisms using state-of-the-art techniques and innovative approaches.

Our research group is known for its collaborative and interdisciplinary environment, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. We employ a comprehensive approach, integrating neurophysiological investigations with behavioral studies to gain deeper insights into the complex interplay between microcircuits in the basal ganglia and behavior. We are interested in understanding how pathological alterations in the striatum are involved in generating behaviors in animal models of neurodevelopmental disorders. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies and animal models, we aim to make significant contributions to the field of neurophysiology, paving the way for the development of novel therapeutic interventions for neurodevelopmental disorders.

Duties

As a key member of our Research Group, you will play a crucial role in advancing our research objectives. We are looking for motivated young scientist with previous experiences with behavioral and/or electrophysiological approaches.

Your duties will include, but are not limited to:

  • Experimental Design and Execution: Develop and implement neurophysiological or behavioral experiments using animal models, specifically focusing on the basal ganglia. Design experiments for recording, analyzing, and interpreting neural activity in brain slices or in vivo to unravel the mechanisms underlying behavioral responses. We require a minimum experience in electrophysiology recordings and stereotaxic surgeries or behavioral neuroscience.
  • Data Analysis and Interpretation: Employ advanced data analysis techniques to extract meaningful insights from neurophysiological recordings. Collaborate with team members to integrate neurophysiological findings with behavioral outcomes, contributing to the understanding of the neural circuits governing behavior. We require the use of software for data analysis such as Igor, Python, R, etc…
  • Instrumentation and Technology Management: Maintain and optimize laboratory equipment for neurophysiological (or behavioral) experiments. Stay abreast of emerging technologies and methodologies in the field, ensuring the incorporation of cutting-edge tools to enhance research capabilities.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Work closely with interdisciplinary team members. Foster a collaborative atmosphere that encourages the exchange of ideas and expertise, driving innovation within the division. We require an adequate use and comprehension of the English.
  • Publication and Presentation: Contribute to the dissemination of research findings through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific conferences. Engage with the broader scientific community to share insights and build networks within the field of neurophysiology and behavior. We require that the applicants have previous experience with writing of scientific reports.
  •

This position offers a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of groundbreaking research, contributing to the advancement of knowledge in neurophysiology and its implications for understanding and treating neurodevelopmental disorders. Priority will be given to applicants that have a strong motivation to join our team and possess the technical requirements specified above.

    Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

    Location: Solna

    Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

    Application process

An application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

    • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
    • A complete list of publications
    • A summary of current work (no more than one page)

The application is to be submitted on the Varbi recruitment system.
