Postdoctoral Researcher in modelling and analyzing neurodegenerative disease in mouse models

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

The Division of Neurogeriatrics consists of about 65 employees. The division conducts experimental and translational research related primarily to Alzheimer's disease and other neurodegenerative diseases, but also more general molecular mechanisms with biomedical relevance are studied. The division is mainly located in BioClinicum, KI Campus Solna, and partially in Neo, KI Campus Flemingsberg.

The research group of Jaan-Olle Andressoo, located in campus Flemingsberg, seeks applications for a 2-year post-doctoral researcher position in the field of neuroscience. The laboratory’s goal is to develop novel therapeutic approaches by implementing various techniques including by creating tools, which allow increasing endogenous gene expression.

Dr Jaan-Olle Andressoo is located at the KI Huddinge Campus. He has a parallel team at the University of Helsinki Finland. The two laboratories share work discussions, journal clubs and projects via frequent online meetings. Together with the KI environment, this setup provides critical mass for excellent performance.

Applications are invited for a 2-year postdoctoral position to be part of an innovative lab where we aim to conditionally enhance the function of genes of interest to model and eventually treat neurodegenerative diseases.

The main focus of the project is to explore novel treatment options in mouse models of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson’s disease (PD) by using pharmacological and genetic tools.

This position is a temporary employment for 2 years with the possibility of extension.

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

An ideal postdoc candidate is a scientifically and socially ambitious team player with a strong drive in science while also harboring an ability to forward the project independently.

A successful candidate has experience in at least some of the following techniques: Experience with work with mouse models of human neurological disease, practical skills in performing behavioral tests, mouse perfusion and mouse dissection (especially different parts of the brain, spinal cord and gut); stereotactic brain injection to deliver chemicals or AAV; is home in molecular biology and visualization tools including work with DNA, RNA, and protein including, PCR, QPCR+data analysis, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, confocal microscopy and image analysis. An EU-accepted license to work with animals such as FELASA C is an advantage. Prior experience in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and ALS is an important merit.

The working language is English. Since the positon involves integration of skills from several teams and core facilities at the KI and collaborating with a team at the University of Helsinki, Finland the applicant should have good social skills. Thus personal suitability is therefore important.
