Postdoctoral position in Decision Support Using Constraint Programming

Updated: 3 months ago
Deadline: 29 Jan 2024

Published: 2023-12-15

The Department of Information Technology holds a leading position in both research and education at all levels. We are currently Uppsala University's third largest department, have around 350 employees, including 120 teachers and 120 PhD students. Approximately 5,000 undergraduate students take one or more courses at the department each year. You can find more information about us on the department of Information Technology website.

The postdoctoral fellow will be part of the Optimisation research group, which currently has two professors, one associate professor, and one assistant professor. Our research focuses on methods and tools for constraint programming, mathematical programming, and local search. We also collaborate closely with industry and researchers in other domains for various real-world applications, such as vehicle routing for winter road maintenance, designing laboratory experiments, real-time resource scheduling in mobile networks, and the sawing of tree trunks. The research environment is international, with English being the working language. We are active members of the optimisation community and are hosting CPAIOR 2024 . You can find more information on the website of the Optimisation research group .

Duties
The postdoctoral fellow will collaborate with members of the group on developing constraint programming methods to aid decision support in life science applications.  The project will involve exploring a range of possible directions, including but not limited to:

  • Devising specialised models and methods for solving problem substructures in the context of laboratory experiment design.
  • Investigating the hybridisation of constraint programming and other artificial intelligence methods for reasoning and prediction, such as active learning, applied to drug discovery for brain tumours.

Please do not self-select out because your experience does not perfectly match the topic of the opening. We will take into account the strengths and interests of the successful applicant when delimiting their project direction.

The position is a 2-year career-development appointment focused on research and includes teaching (20%). You are expected to be able to teach in Swedish or English.

Requirements
PhD degree in computer science or mathematics or a foreign degree equivalent to a PhD degree in computer science or mathematics with a focus on the relevant field such as constraint programming, combinatorial optimisation, or operations research. The degree needs to be obtained by the time of the decision of employment. Those who have obtained a PhD degree three years prior to the application deadline are primarily considered for the employment. The starting point of the three-year frame period is the application deadline. Due to special circumstances, the degree may have been obtained earlier. The three-year period can be extended due to circumstances such as sick leave, parental leave, duties in labour unions, etc.

When selecting among the applicants, we will assess their ability to creatively and independently drive their work forward, to collaborate with others, to have a structured approach, and to work with complex problems. Excellent command of oral and written English is a requirement.

Additional qualifications
Experience in interdisciplinary or applied research is meriting. Experience with decision support methods or artificial intelligence areas other than constraint programming is also meriting.

Application: The application must contain:

  • A cover letter briefly describing your motivation for applying for this position and indicating the earliest possible employment date (max 1 page).
  • A curriculum vitae (CV).
  • Relevant diplomas and transcripts (translated into Swedish or English).
  • A list of publications.
  • Up to five selected publications.
  • A research statement describing your past and current research and its relation to the project (max 1 page) and a proposal for future activities concerning one of the project’s possible directions (max 1 page).
  • Contact information for at least two references (names and full contact details, including telephone numbers). Please do not include reference letters.

About the employment
The employment is a temporary position of 2 years according to central collective agreement. Full time position. Starting date April 1st 2024or as agreed. Placement: Uppsala
