First Researcher Engineer in Drug DevelopmentUniversity of GothenburgAPPLICATION DEADLINE: January 24, 2022view
The University of Gothenburg tackles society’s challenges with diverse knowledge. 53 500 students and 6 500 employees make the university a large and inspiring place to work and study. Strong research and attractive study programmes attract scientists and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University contributes to a better future.
The Swedish NMR Centre at the University of Gothenburg is a national research infrastructure, hosted by the department of chemistry and molecular biology, and with a strong link to the Sahlgrenska academy. We support high-quality research and education in chemical sciences and molecular life sciences. Our research and education focuses on a deep understanding of chemical and biological processes in cells and in the environment.
We address important societal issues such as antibiotic resistance, cancer, precision medicine, materials development, environmental problems and drug development. In this way, we contribute to achieving the UN’s global goals for sustainable development in the areas of good health and well-being, sustainable energy for all, and combating climate change.
We work in an international environment with interdisciplinary collaborations in both research and education, and contribute to the University of Gothenburg’s top ranking in life science. We collaborate with societal actors, such as schools, business and authorities, and we are also part of the SciLifeLab research infrastructure. The Swedish NMR Centre is located in central premises on campus Medicinareberget in Gothenburg.
Chemical Biology Consortium Sweden, CBCS, will from 2022 be a Swedish Research Council funded research infrastructure of national interest. This means that the existing capabilities will be strengthened and new capabilities and four new nodes – at Lund, Uppsala, Linköping and Gothenburg Universities, respectively, will be established. CBCS (www.CBCS.se ) has been in operation since 2010 with two nodes – one at Karoliska Institute and one at Umeå University – and is a research infrastructure for chemical biology at Science for Life Laboratory (www.scilifelab.se ) in the Chemical Biology and Genome Engineering platform. CBCS offers services for the identification of chemical tools (bioactive small-molecules) for all fields of life sciences. The research infrastructure offers collaborative service and guidance within assay development, small-molecule screening and hit to chemical probe optimization. Additional service offerings in small-molecule profiling, including Cell Painting, and screening in primary and complex disease models are currently being established.
The CBCS node in Gothenburg is currently seeking a versatile biologist or biochemist skilled in assay development and small molecule screening who will help CBCS in its mission of identifying, developing and optimizing high-quality small molecule tool compounds for academic researchers.
The applicant will be part of a local CBCS service node in Gothenburg, and will work in close collaboration with the Swedish NMR Centre at the University of Gothenburg, SNC (www.gu.se/nmr). SNC provides access to advanced NMR spectrometers and associated equipment for users from both academy and industry. Expert support and method development is given within the focus areas of structural biology, chemical biology, metabolomics, material science and small molecule NMR. Both SNC and CBCS are integrated into the Science for Life Laboratory (www.scilifelab.se ).
Job assignments
We are seeking a versatile person skilled in assay development and small molecule screening. Activities will include evaluating, developing and optimizing both biochemical and cell-based assays in a high throughput format including fragment based NMR screens targeting specific biomolecules. Activities may also include work with primary patient material and complex disease models and. You will also provide expertise, guide and support users within these areas. You are expected to communicate with users and to expand and widen the user community. You will work closely in a team of biologists, medicinal chemists and physical chemists located at the other CBCS nodes and the SNC and be part of a vibrant research community, enabling chemical biology and drug discovery innovations.
Eligible applicants will have a well-documented track record of relevance to the employment and must have experience in assay development and small molecule screening. Knowledge about fragment based NMR screening is meriting, as well as experience from pharmaceutical industry or academic screening centers.
You will need a strong passion for daily experimental work and an aptitude for analyzing, interpreting and reporting high quality screening data. Laboratory automation experience and an ability to troubleshoot screening equipment including robotic liquid handlers and plate readers will also be considered valuable and also experience in NMR experimental setups.
The successful candidate must have a staff scientist mind set, be service minded and dedicated to high quality and reproducible data production, presentation of results and have very good interpersonal and cooperation skills, be flexible and capable of working independently in a structured and efficient way. The applicant must be able to cooperate and communicate well with researchers in a multitude of fields. Excellent communication skills in written and spoken English are essential as well as documentation skills and experience in working with electronic lab notebooks.
