The position is based at the Department of Ecology which is part of the Ecology Centre at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU), in Uppsala, Sweden. We conduct research for sustainable agriculture, forest production and biological conservation. Our basic research on populations, communities and ecosystems forms the foundation for understanding influences of land use and climate on animals, plants and soil nutrient status and greenhouse gas balance. Solutions are sought that will mitigate climate change, preserve threatened species, benefit biological diversity and ecosystem services and control pests in managed agricultural, forested and urban landscapes. Active dissemination, outreach and frequent contacts with stakeholders are key activities. We build on extensive national and international research collaborations to generate cutting-edge research and outreach to further ecology as science and promote sustainable agriculture.
We are hiring field assistants for multiple projects for the period April-September 2021. The field work will be conducted in several parts of Sweden (Uppsala, Västra Götaland and Skåne). We are looking for persons to assist with collection and processing of samples from field experiments. The assistants will work with projects related to landscape ecology, biological pest control, pollination, soil ecology and effects of agricultural management on insects, soil organisms and ecosystem service delivery. The assistants will gain experience in applied crop protection, ecology, entomology, soil ecology and sustainable agriculture.
Duties:
The assistants will help establishing and collect data from field experiments using insect traps (sticky traps, pitfall traps, pant traps etc.), sweep netting, leaf suction, soil sampling and by observing and counting plants and insects in the field. They will also sort, count and compile collected material in the laboratory.
Qualifications:
Applicants should preferably have, or study for, a Bachelor or Master degree in biology, ecology, agronomy or an equivalent subject. Applicants must have a strong interest in crop protection, nature conservation, entomology, pollination ecology, soil ecology and/or ecological field work, and should be able to work both independently and as part of a research team. Earlier experience of ecological field work (preferably using any of the above mentioned methods) is meriting, as is plant and insect taxonomical knowledge. The applicant should be attentive to details, and have the capacity to work in the field irrespective of weather conditions for extended hours during peak workload periods.
