The Southern Swedish Forest Research Centre is an interdisciplinary department where research and teaching is conducted in several subjects of importance to sustainable forestry. Research areas include forestry, ecology, pathology, policy and planning. The extensive teaching at basic and advanced level covers all of these subject areas.

Subject area

The subject of the position is conservation ecology with a focus on the effects of forestry on ground vegetation. 


Duties

The Assistant Professor is expected to develop their own research line within the subject area and is expected to meet the requirements for promotion to Associate Professor during this position.
The research covers both fundamental and application-related issues with relevance for forestry and nature conservation. The research shall include, but need not be limited to, effects of various nature conservation measures, forest restoration and various forest management alternatives on biological diversity, especially ground vegetation, in southern Sweden's forests.
Possible research areas include, but are not limited to, investigating the influence of stand structure in production forests on ground vegetation (vascular plants, mosses and lichens) and improving our understanding of how different management systems affect species richness and distribution of forest-dwelling species. Statistical processing of forest stand data and of spatial data (GIS) should be central to the research.

In addition, the holder of the position shall:

  • act in accordance with the vision, goals and basic values of SLU,
  • apply for external research funding in competition and publish scientific articles,
  • initiate the development of his/her own research group,
  • participate in postgraduate education as a co-supervisor,
  • teach at basic and advanced levels, including at postgraduate level,
  • collaborate closely with researchers within the department and other parts of SLU, as well as nationally and internationally,
  • receive pedagogical training, and are expected to fulfil the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer during the employment,
  • build and further develop networks with the surrounding society, nationally and internationally, and
  • disseminate research findings. 

Non Swedish-speaking staff members are expected to, within four years of first being employed, have sufficient knowledge of Swedish/Scandinavian to understand information in Swedish.


Qualifications

Eligible for employment as associate senior lecturer are candidates who hold a PhD or have equivalent academic qualifications. Priority will be given to candidates who have received a PhD or equivalent qualifications no longer than five years before the application deadline. Other candidates may also be considered if there are extraordinary grounds for doing so. Extraordinary grounds refer to illness, parental leave or similar circumstances.

For employment as associate senior lecturer, the candidate must be scientifically proficient in the subject area of the position.

Good ability to communicate in written and spoken English is required.


Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate senior lecturer will primarily be based on the degree to which the applicant/candidate possesses the required qualifications specified for the position.

The assessment criteria for appointment as an associate senior lecturer shall be the degree of the scientific expertise required as a qualification for employment.

Furthermore, the assessment includes evaluating the applicant’s ability to develop an independent line of research within the subject area, and to qualify for promotion to senior lecturer during the employment period.

Good taxonomic knowledge of lichens, mosses and vascular plants as well as knowledge of Swedish forest ecosystems and forest management systems are meritorious.

The position will be offered to the person who, after a qualitative overall assessment, is assessed to be most suitable to carry out and develop the above-mentioned duties and to contribute to the positive development of the organization.

Form of Employment

The employment is limited to five years in accordance with the Higher Education Act. A position as associate senior lecturer is a qualifying employment that constitutes the first step in an academic career at SLU. An associate senior lecturer has the right during his/her employment to apply for promotion to senior lecturer on the basis of criteria established when the position as associate senior lecturer was announced.
