Job Description

The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering seeks to hire a Laboratory technologist to provide support in the structural engineering laboratory, which houses a large array of heavy testing equipment, to support educational activities, including both undergraduate lab classes and final year projects. An experienced laboratory technologist will be essential to ensure the safe operation of large equipment during the lab class and to guide the final year students in using the heavy testing machines in the lab. 


•    To prepare undergraduate lab classes in the structural engineering laboratory, which includes:

  • preparation of the concrete material specimens for the lab classes
  • preparation of the reinforced concrete beam specimens for the lab classes 
  • assist the students in the testing of various specimens during the lab classes
  • to coordinate the disposal of specimens after the lab class
  • to provide safety instructions and guidelines for students before and during the lab classes


•    To guide the undergraduate final year students in the use of heavy testing equipment:

  • the safe operation of a large number of universal testing machines with the capacity from 30 ton to 100 ton
  • safe operation of compression material testing with capacity up to 1000 tons
  • safe operation of hydraulic actuators from 100 tons to 2000 tons
  • to provide safety advice to the final year students working in the lab


•    To enhance the safe work procedures and risk assessments of the heavy testing equipment in response to:

  • different lab class requirement due to the foreseeable changes in the evolving curriculum in the College of Design and Engineering
  • new final year research projects in emerging areas of structural resilience in response to the new research directions in the sea-level rise, climate change, etc.  

Job Requirements

 


•    At least a recognised Polytechnic Diploma in Engineering or related services. 
•    At least 2 years of relevant experience. 
•    Competent in operating the universal testing machines.
•    Possess relevant experience in laboratory safety.
•    Good spoken and written communications. 
•    Open to fixed term contract (2-year).
