The School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology is seeking to hire a technical specialist to provide support to the Undergraduate teaching and research laboratory. The individual will be supporting on fluid mechanics, bioengineering device, 3D printer and maker’s lab in mechanical components preparation or fabrication, device assembly and modification. The individual will be assisting goods receiving store and inventory management in the school as well as lab waste disposal, general maintenance and safety of lab.

Manage and support undergraduate lab and projects such as fluid mechanics lab, bioengineering device testing, 3D printing and maker’s lab

  • Design and prepare the commonly used mechanical components, adaptors, connectors and tools for the process

  • Assist students in device assembly and modification using 3D printer, handheld or benchtop drilling, sanding, polishing and cutting machine

  • Facilitate in basic troubleshooting on student independent device using tools such as multimeter. Test student prototype to evaluate its functionality using different methods such as measuring, fitting, assembling and simulation

  • Advise, prepare and purchase the suitable components and consumables for student’s project

  • Provide technical assistance during lab sessions

  • Provide advice and assistance for maker’s lab

  • Conduct lab housekeeping

Operation and maintenance of mechanical fabrication machine and tools

  • Propose and sourcing suitable mechanical machine and tools for the maker’s lab

  • Take proactive approach in understanding the students’ projects, and provide assistance and troubleshooting

  • Develop troubleshooting guide

  • Develop user guide

  • Provide hands-on training to end user

Goods Receiving and Inventory Management

  • Provide analysis of the inventory for purchasing and budget projection

  • Ensure inventories are properly kept e.g. items that are temperature sensitive to be kept in the freezer

  • Ensure proper inventory management by updating inventory record once consumables, apparatus and solvents are received or distributed to users

  • Receive goods from various deliveries and dispense goods to end user in a timely manner

  • Maintain the housekeeping of the store

Proper and timely disposal of lab waste

  • Handle and coordinate the different waste (e.g. chemical and biological) from various teaching and research labs for disposal

  • Liaise with appointed waste collection vendor to dispose waste in timely manner

  • Submission of the waste disposal list to NEA in a timely manner

  • Maintain good housekeeping for the waste collection room

Maintenance of Lab, Safety and Exit Clearance

  • Conduct regular lab inspections to ensure safety protocol is followed

  • Assist in lab clearance ensuring controlled chemicals and reagents are returned as well as the general maintenance of the lab

Requirements:

  • Diploma or Bachelor’s in Engineering or technology

  • More than 3 years’ relevant experience in academic, research or industrial sector.

  • Adequate practical hands-on skills to handle lab scientific equipment operation and troubleshooting. Experience in device assembly and modification using handheld or benchtop drilling, milling, sanding, polishing and cutting machine.

  • Operation and maintenance of mechanical fabrication machine will be preferred.
