Lab Executive Position (Department of Architecture)

National University of Singapore’s Department of Architecture is expanding its model making workshops to enable state-of-the art CNC and 3D printing capabilities.

The Department seeks a skilled and knowledgeable individual to guide and instruct students in each semester when attempting physical models as part of their coursework. This candidate will create and conduct interesting introductory courses on operational and precautionary matters to ensure user-safety and be responsible for authorising usage under his/her supervision.

Fifty machines will be dedicated to student usage and the candidate will be part of a three-man team to manage the facility and maintain equipment serviceability at all times.

From time to time, the selected candidate will be supported in skill upgrading to advance his/her career development in order to prepare for a future strategic role in developing the facility for the long term.

 


Duties and Responsibilities

The appointed Lab Executive will be involved in the following tasks:

  • Work closely with the senior Lab Officers/Technologist and be responsible for the day to day workshop operations and equipment deployment
  • Train CNC equipment and other equipment operation to students/staff systematically and develop detailed instruction materials
  • Assist CNC equipment operation for prototype making in various scales: from industrial design to architecture.
  • Control safety standard of the workshop and various equipment; document safety inspection report.
  • Prepare contract with vendors with updated knowledge on (CNC) machine and other digital equipment specification.
  • Maintain (CNC) equipment and related tools.
  • Work closely with academic staff for the procurement of specific equipment/tools for deployment in on-site design learning and investigation.
  • Set up inventory and system to manage the deployment of all equipment/tools overseen by the workshop.
  • Plan regular maintenance and upgrade for the other digital equipment e.g. 3D Laser Scanners, UAV surveyor etc.

Job Requirements

Essential Attributes:

Expertly perform CNC programming, operation and daily maintenance.

Good craftsmanship accompanied with excellent knowledge of materials and the latest machining technologies.

Ability to materialize design intentions as high quality physical prototypes in discussion with architects /designers /students.

Excellent communication skills to instruct students and staff.

Qualified to degree level or equivalent in Manufacturing/Automation/Engineering based discipline.

Experience in managing the inventory and system for tracking  the deployment of mobile equipment/tools

Good to Have:

Experience working with Robotics (6 Axis above) is distinct advantage for the workshop's current provisions.
