Job Description

The Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM) was established in 2015, but its collection of natural history specimens spans more than two centuries, and continues to increase. Apart from physical specimens, it manages a growing collection of digital resources including images, publications, and other types of digital records which are necessary for research and education. We are seeking a dynamic and suitably qualified individual to lead in, suggest solutions and implement systems/strategies to manage this growing digital footprint and to work with LKCNHM subject specialists to curate and archive the large amount of scientific and other data, and information generated through research on biodiversity in Southeast Asia. The individual will play a pivotal role in ensuring that scientific data and information is managed in such a way that allows easy and smooth access to users, thus supporting the advancement of research and education. 

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following -

1) Scope and develop a platform to serve as a biodiversity information gateway for Singapore biodiversity information.
2) Assist with all museum-wide aspects of information and data relating to the collections: organizing information, storage, preservation and use of data on the collections
3) Relate and link various databases and other digital resources that come under LKCNHM to be accessible through the biodiversity information gateway.
4) Curate and/or organise the digital collections at LKCNHM, including new genomic, imaging, specimen, collection and other data that will continuously be generated.
5) Specific duties include:

  • Setting up and managing core digital platforms/facilities within the LKCNHM.
  • Maintaining the biodiversity information gateway for public delivery of data (for use by researchers, educators or interest groups for example).
  • Managing and enhancing the integrity and accuracy of the digital collection information systems, including the collection database, and other digital records.
  • Working with museum staff to improve specimen metadata, such as through photography, geo-referencing, and linking with host specimen records; and to support the on-line presence of the collection, contributing to the LKCNHM website.
  • Facilitating data contribution to national and international data repositories.
  • Managing data storage and preservation, including local servers and cloud services, and maintaining an appropriate back-up strategy.
  • Recruiting and supervising interns and/or student assistants within the digital collection and biodiversity informatics; ensuring appropriate training, orientation, evaluation and discipline.
  • Developing and preparing short monthly and annual reports and project reports for the digital collection.
  • Work with the Museum curators and Research Associates to develop and implement policies, standards, and procedures (e.g. developing standard operating procedures for accessioning and databasing of specimen and associated data).
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Requirements/Other Info

1) BSc or above in data science or digital management.
2) Two years of working or training experience on data management or similar related work.
3) Strong English writing and verbal skills.
4) Documented ability to multi-task and work well in a team.


Desirable skills:
1) Able to manage multiple stakeholders.
2) Able to manage projects within tight timeline.
3) Some understanding of specimen imaging and digitization.
4) Singapore class 3 driving licence is advantageous.

 

 

- Remuneration is based on a 12-month salary structure, with annual variable bonus which is subject to incumbent’s performance and the University/School’s prevailing remuneration policies.

- The incumbent will be emplaced at an appropriate appointment grade based on his/her individual merits.
