Offer Description
Background
The Research and Development Institute for Artificial Intelligence of Serbia (IVI) is offering a PhD position for engagement on the new Horizon EU project ARTIFACT - ARTificial Intelligence for Flood Resilient Infrastructure.
Amidst the mounting challenges posed by climate change, particularly escalating urban flooding events, the Institute for Artificial Intelligence R&D of Serbia (IVI) introduces the ARTIFACT project, focusing on the synergy of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and engineering for urban flood resilience. Recognizing the limitations of existing physics-based models, the ARTIFACT seeks to harness AI's capabilities to elevate urban flood prediction, management, and mitigation, emphasising the importance of integrating nature-based solutions (NBS) and AI in urban planning to confront future flood risks. Notably, IVI aims to utilize vast datasets and advanced machine learning techniques to offer in-depth, real-time analysis concerning climate change impacts. By intertwining AI-driven solutions and expertise of IVI with engineering prowess from leading EU partners, Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), IHE Delft Institute for Water Education (IHE Delft), and Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), the initiative aims to foster advanced strategies in AI-based urban flood modelling. As IVI positions itself at the forefront of AI-driven environmental modelling, the ARTIFACT project emerges as a beacon of innovation, cementing IVI's role as a regional leader and research lighthouse in this domain.
Description of the PhD project
Selected doctoral candidate will focus on the development of AI-based models for urban flood forecasting, integrating green and grey water infrastructure in an AI-based hybrid model, which will take into account the impact of climate change. The aim is to utilise the speed of AI methods (e.g., CNN, RNN, GNN, etc.) to develop suitable rapid flood assessment tools for early flood warning and damage assessment in the urban context. The lack of measured data on water and civil infrastructure will be supplemented based on physically based models from the domain of urban hydrology and hydraulics (e.g., TUFLOW), and the supplemented dataset will then be used for the development of AI-based models for flood forecasting. Furthermore, work will focus on utilising new AI methods for exploratory modeling of future urban development greening scenarios (using NBS technology) for flood levels and extents in the future climate.
Due to the project dynamics, doctoral student will have the opportunity to travel and stay short-term and medium-term in Delft (Netherlands) visiting TU Delft and IHE Delft. Doctoral student will also have mentorship support from world-renowned academics from these two organizations.
Doctoral student will be hired by and work at IVI headquarters in Belgrade (Serbia), while PhD program will be based on the Faculty of Civil Engineering, University of Belgrade (Serbia), under mentorship of staff from both IVI and FCE. This is a unique opportunity for a focused doctoral thesis on a single scientific project, under the supervision of experts in the field of AI and the field of water and environmental engineering.
