Offer Description

A Research Fellowship (BI) (Reference REQUIMTE 24-13) on the project with reference PD21-00024 - Valorização de resíduos sólidos do processamento da castanha: extração de biopolímeros e preparação de filmes biodegradáveis, supported by national funds by Fundação “La Caixa” and FCT/MCTES, is available at REQUIMTE.

 

Main research field: Bioresources

 

Admission requirements: BSc degree in Bioresources or related scientific area. Frequency of the MSc in the areas of Bioresources or related scientific area and/or attending a non-degree course taught by a higher education institution in collaboration with an R&D unit.

 

In case the BSc degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must comply with the provisions of Decree-Law no. 341/2007 of October 12th, and all formalities established therein must be complied with at the signature of Fellowship contract.

 

 

Working plan:

Fractionation of chestnut by-products:

• Extraction of cellulose fibers and other compounds using sustainable extraction techniques.

• Evaluation of different parameters to maximize waste fractionation efficiency and selectivity.

• Biochemical characterization of the extracted compounds

Film development:

• Production of films incorporating the extracted compounds.

• Characterization of films regarding their mechanical and bioactive properties and applicability in food systems.

• Evaluation of phytotoxicity after 6 months of polymer degradation.

 

Applicable Legislation: Law nº.40/2004, 18th August (Research Fellow Statute) amended and republished by Decreto-Lei n.º 123/2019, 28th August; FCT Regulation for Research Studentships and Fellowships (https://former.fct.pt/apoios/bolsas/regulamentos.phtml.pt ).

 

Work Place: The work will be conducted at GRAQ - Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto, with the possibility of carrying out some tests in another laboratory, under the supervision of Professor Valentina Domingues and Professor Olga Freitas.

 

Duration of the fellowship: The fellowship will have duration of 6 months, possibly renewable for equal period for up to 12 months, starting on May of 2024.

 

Monthly stipend:

Monthly stipend is €990,98 according to the stipends established by FCT, I.P. in Portugal (https://www.fct.pt/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Tabela-de-Valores-SMM_atu… ). Payment will be made by bank transfer on a monthly basis. The successful candidate will also be entitled to the reimbursement of Social Security payments (Seguro Social Voluntário) and work insurance.

 

Selection criteria: The selection of candidates will be made according to the following criteria:

i) 30%, average of the degree;

ii) 35%, experience in research;

iii) 25%, overall scientific coherence of the CV, including diversity and quality of scientific indicators, including relevant published articles

iv) 10%, letter of motivation.

In the case of admitted candidates whose evaluation does not differ more than 10% from that obtained by the best positioned candidate, the jury will interview these candidates. In this situation, the value of the interview is 50%

 

The jury will not award the current scholarship to candidates with a final classification lower than 50%.
