This is a per diem position.

 

Position Summary

At the Long Island State Veterans Home, our Physician Assistants are valuable members of our team, who, under the supervision of a staff physician, are responsible for providing medical care to all residents of the Long Island State Veterans Home.

These duties include the entire range of practice, from diagnostic to treatment activities.

 

 

Duties of a Physician Assistant may include the following but are not limited to:

  • Perform all duties under the supervision of an LISVH attending physician.
  • Perform complete physical exams including the ordering of necessary diagnostic tests.
  • Assess and evaluate acute and chronic illnesses or conditions presented by patients, and prescribe treatment plans and medications consistent with the guidelines established by the supervising physician(s).
  • Work with staff physicians and the Medical Director to ensure that institutional policies and procedures are followed.
  • Update patient medical records after completion of examination, assessment and treatment and regularly perform chart reviews and audits.
  • Consult with the supervising physician prior to initiating subspecialty consultation referrals.
  • Conduct clinical and formal instruction of students in the Physician Assistant Program (School of Health Technology and Management). Incumbent may also serve as preceptor to physician assistant students.
  • Assist nursing staff with phlebotomy and other procedures, e.g., electrocardiogram.
  • Provide technical assistance to clinical staff.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary comprehensive assessment and care planning.
  • Perform duties in the LISVH Employee Health clinic under the supervision of the Medical Director.
  • Participate in appropriate teaching and research activities in cooperation with the Schools of the Health Science Center.
  • Perform On-Call duties with supervising physicians.
  • Attend Corporate Compliance training and adhere to the procedures of the Corporate Compliance Program.

Working conditions may involve exposure to infectious disease, blood, body fluids and/or tissue as well as other unpleasant elements such as accidents, injuries and illness. May be exposed to and be required to handle varying unpredictable, emergency and crisis situations. Occasionally subjected to irregular hours and pressure due to multiple calls and inquiries, as well as weather related situations.

 

Qualifications

 

Required Qualifications:  Completion of an accredited Physician Assistant training program. Current NYS Physician Assistant license. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:  Long-term care experience. NCCPA* certification (*National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants).

Special Notes:

The Long Island State Veterans Home is a tobacco-free environment. Tobacco products are strictly prohibited anywhere on our 25-acre campus, including parking lots and outdoor areas on the premises. 

Essential Position:  This position has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed.  This means that when the Long Island State Veterans Home is faced with an emergency, employees in such positions are required to remain at their work location or to report to work.

The LISVH is a 24/7 skilled nursing facility. As such, all positions are subject to changes in pass days and shifts as necessary to meet the operating needs of the facility.

The use of Vacation or Personal Leave accruals during the first 6 months of employment will not be authorized unless prior approval has been granted by Human Resources.

The selected candidate must successfully clear a background investigation. Prior to start date,  the selected candidate must meet the following requirements: Successfully complete pre-employment physical examination and obtain medical clearance from the Long Island State Veterans Home Employee Health Department, clear a background investigation, submit three (3) written references, and provide a copy of the required license(s)/certificate(s). Please be advised that failure to comply with any of the above requirements could result in a delayed start date and/or revocation of the employment offer.

 

In accordance with the New York State Department of Health (DOH) regulation that all hospitals and nursing homes “continuously require all personnel to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19,” Candidates who are not already partially vaccinated must obtain the first dose of the vaccine within three (3) calendar days of acceptance of conditional job offer and must obtain any subsequent doses in accordance with the vaccine protocol, including booster vaccines. Candidates who are partially vaccinated, but not yet fully vaccinated, must complete their vaccination series within three (3) calendar days of job offer or in accordance with vaccine manufacture protocol, whichever comes later.

The regulation also includes those who may be affiliated with or interact with employees of a hospital or nursing home. The regulation allows for limited exemptions with reasonable accommodations, consistent with applicable law.
