Two Positions as PhD Research Fellows in inorganic chemistry and catalysis (# of pos: 2)

Updated: about 2 years ago
Job Type: FullTime
Deadline: 22 May 2022

There are two (2) vacancies for a PhD Research Fellows in inorganic chemistry, material chemistry and catalysis at the Department of Chemistry. The positions are for a fixed-term period of 3 years with the possibility of a 4th year with compulsory other work (e.g. teaching duties at the Department). The two positions will focus on the development of efficient and completely recyclable catalysts for the production of sustainable polymers, where CO2 will be used as one of the raw materials. The positions are part of the project Recyclable Catalysts for Sustainable Polymers from CO2 and Bio-based Epoxides, which is funded as a Starting Grant from the Trond Mohn Foundation.

About the project/work tasks

  • The long-term goal of the research project is to develop recyclable catalysts for making CO2 -based polymers.
  • The hired fellows will design, synthesise, and characterise hybrid organic-inorganic compounds as potential catalysts for efficient and selective conversion of epoxide and CO2 to polycarbonates.
  • The work will primarily focus on synthesis, and initially the focus will be on tailor-made hybrid organic-inorganic compounds based on polyoxometalates and organic ligands. The compounds will be systematically tested in standard processes for epoxide / CO2 copolymerisation, and subsequently in processes with renewable epoxides for a more environmentally friendly production of plastic.
  • The hired fellows will be part of a research team, and will work together with PhD, MSc and BSc students. This also means that the candidates are given the opportunity to develop his or her skills in research leadership and guidance
