Job description

The Department of Physics at the University of Oslo is looking for a highly talented early-career scholar with the potential to become a research leader in the field of quantum science and technology. Recruitment will take place via a tenure track position.

About the tenure track system:

This position is announced according to §2b in UiO’s tenure track regulations :

“The appointment is a fixed-term position as an Associate Professor for six to seven years. During this fixed term period, the candidate has the opportunity to qualify for a tenured position as a Professor.”

The tenure-track associate professor’s duties will primarily include research, but also include supervision, teaching, and other duties necessary to qualify for a permanent professor position within 6-7 years.

The successful candidate will be subject to two types of review during the tenure-track period:

• a mid-term assessment after 3-4 years
• a final tenure assessment at the end of the tenure track period

If the final tenure assessment is positive, they will be employed as full professor.

The overall purpose of the review system is to ensure and maintain the high academic standards of the university’s senior faculty staff. To help meet these standards, the successful candidate will be followed up closely by the department.

About the position:

The Department of Physics is in the process of developing a strategic research and education program in quantum science and technology (QS/QT), spanning from experimental to computational and theoretical physics. Moreover, research on semiconductor-based quantum materials for quantum technology has recently been declared a strategic focus area at the Center for Material Science and Nanotechnology (SMN), where the department is a main stakeholder. The successful candidate will be affiliated with the experimental semiconductor research environment at SMN. At the same time, they will be expected to participate in research activities in computational and theoretical QS/QT in other sections at the department, with the aim to help create a strong and coherent QS/QT activity across the department and on the national arena. An important part of the position will be active involvement in the development of BSc and MSc studies in QS/QT.

Qualification requirements

Required qualifications:

• PhD in physics in the past 2-5 years (additional time may be allowed for leave relating to childbirth or adoption)
• Strong scientific track record in experimental semiconductor physics, specifically with focus on quantum technology
• Experience with attracting external research funding
• Documented pedagogical qualifications (see “how to apply”)
• Good language skills, in particular a good command of both written and spoken English. The person appointed to the position must be able to teach in Norwegian (or another Scandinavian language) within two years of the appointment.

Desired qualifications:

• Experience with research on point defect based quantum technology
• Broad perspective in the wider field of quantum technology, including a proven track record of collaboration with theoretical/computational research activities. 
• Experience from teaching and supervising students at all levels
• Experience with scientific programming and the use of numerical methods in research and education
• Experience with communicating university level research and education to a wider (non-scientific) audience.

Scientific qualifications will play a major role in the evaluation process. Pedagogical qualifications and teaching and supervision experience at all levels will be an important factor in the evaluation process and should be well documented in a teaching portfolio. The applicant should describe their qualifications in view of the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) framework which includes:

• Focus on student learning
• A clear development over time
• A researching approach
• A collegial attitude and practice

The successful candidate who at the time of appointment cannot document sufficient teaching qualifications (minimum formal requirement is a 200 hrs pedagogical program) will be required to obtain such qualifications within a two-year period.

• Ability to create and contribute to a well-functioning, inclusive and productive research environment
• Organizational and networking skills, ability to collaborate and conduct scientific leadership
• Positive and enthusiastic attitude

The successful candidate should have an international profile with respect to the above criteria. The candidate for this position will be selected based on excellence and fit with the department’s research profile.

• A detailed CV, including a complete list of education, positions, pedagogical experience, administrative experience, project acquisition and coordination experience, and other qualifying activities.

• Educational portfolio of 3-6 pages documenting educational competence and experience, including a reflection note in which your own teaching practice and view of learning is anchored in the SoTL framework (focus on student learning, development over time, a researching approach and a collegial attitude and practice)
• List of reference persons: 2-3 references (name, relation to candidate, e-mail and phone number)
