Tenure Track Associate Professor in Algorithms

There is a vacancy for a tenure-track associate professor at the Department of Informatics in Algorithms. This is a 6-year fixed term, with a possible promotion to full professor at the end of this period.

About the department

Digitization of businesses, industry, public administration, and education makes informatics play an increasingly important role in the development of society. Research and education in informatics are crucial for the digital transformation of our society to succeed. The Department of Informatics contributes to this through eight research groups that deliver research and education at a high international level in algorithms, bioinformatics, information security, machine learning, optimization, programming theory, visualization, and didactics. Our centers/labs Center for Data Science (CEDAS) , Computational Biology Unit (CBU) and Energy Informatics Lab are important extensions of our research and education activities.

The department offers education for the future at Bachelor, Master and PhD levels. The department is rapidly growing in terms of its number of students, research directions, and employees. Today, we have about 1000 students and 150 employees from over 35 countries, among which 37 are faculty and 50 are PhD candidates.

Work tasks/ research field

The working environment for this position is the Algorithms research group. Regarding this position, we are particularly interested in applicants qualified to strengthen the group research and teaching activities further in the following directions.

Research. We welcome applications from exceptionally strong candidates with expertise in various areas of algorithms. While candidates with diverse backgrounds and expertise will be considered, preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated research experience and proficiency in algorithmic methods for machine learning. Candidates with a track record of contributions to advancing algorithmic foundations of machine learning (i.e., fairness, accountability, explainability, and transparency in machine learning; statistical learning theory, PAC learning, optimization techniques, or related fields) are highly encouraged to apply.

Teaching. Besides research, candidates should have a passion for teaching and mentoring students. Experience teaching courses related to algorithms or related topics at the undergraduate or graduate level is desirable. Candidates who have demonstrated success in competitive programming and developing massive online courses (MOOCs) will be particularly valued. The ideal candidate should be able to effectively communicate complex concepts in algorithms to students with varying levels of expertise.

Qualifications and personal qualities
  • Applicants must have a doctoral degree within the field of Computer Science or related areas, obtained within the last 5 years (may be extended due to leave of absence in connection with birth or adoption).
  • Experience of high-level research documented by publications in the topmost conferences in Algorithms (FOCS, STOC, SODA, ICALP, SOCG, ESA, STACS, ITCS), and/or Machine Learning (NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, AISTATS), and AI (AAAI, IJCAI) is a requirement.
  • Experience with algorithm engineering is an advantage.
  • Interest in working with other research groups at the Department is an advantage.
  • Scientific achievements including publications, educational and outreach activities will be evaluated and appreciated accordingly. The elapsed time since the award of the PhD will be taken into consideration in the overall assessment.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently and have strong collaborative skills.
  • Applicants must be able to contribute in research teams both as leader and as participant.
  • The successful candidate is expected to contribute to externally financed research activities and should document the ability to acquire external research funding.
  • Applicants must have excellent skills in oral and written English.

Personal and relational qualities will be emphasized. Research experience, ambitions and potential will also count when evaluating the candidates.

Special requirements for the position

The University of Bergen is subjected to the regulation for export control system . The regulation will be applied in the processing of the applications.

Educational competence requirements

Basic teaching training and experience with the supervision of students at university level is a requirement for the position as associate professor. This implies the ability to document

  • completed formal pedagogical training (relevant courses in combination with actual teaching experience can in some cases compensate for a completed course in teaching and learning in higher education).
  • basic skills in planning, implementation, evaluation and development of teaching and supervision.

Educational competence must be documented in an educational portfolio which should include a documented overview of practical experience and competence as well as a brief reflection statement. The statement should primarily describe the applicant’s own teaching philosophy and an evaluation of own teaching in relation to his/her knowledge of students’ learning at a higher education level. You will find more detailed information about criteria and documentation requirements for assessing educational competence here.

Applicants who are unable to document adequate educational competence upon appointment, must meet the requirements within two years of assuming office.

The teaching language will normally be Norwegian. The successful applicant will be given the opportunity to attend courses in order to learn Norwegian and must be able to teach in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language within three years of assuming office.
