Substitute Department Engineer at the Michael Sars Centre (code 1085).

A full time, substitute position as Department Engineer (code 1085) is available in the Burkhardt research group at the Michael Sars Centre with preferred start date 01 June 2024 and duration until 31 Mai 2025. There is a possibility of an extension beyond the initial period of employment should the dates change for the planned leave of the person currently holding the position. Work in the Burkhardt group focuses on the evolutionary origin of synapses and neurons, using choanoflagellates and ctenophores as marine model systems. The Michael Sars Centre belongs to the University of Bergen and is partner of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) www.embl.de/ .

Work tasks:

The position is given technical tasks supporting the group research activities. The successful candidate will receive additional training on specific techniques when necessary. Major tasks will include molecular biological work (e.g., in situ histochemistry, cloning, gene delivery and gene knockouts/knockdowns), imaging (e.g., confocal microscopy) and ctenophore culture. The position also encompasses the responsibility for the daily management of lab equipment and consumables, purchasing and HSE tasks. The employee reports to the group leader though he/she may be temporarily daily supervised by other members of the group.

Partly flexible work schedule will be occasionally necessary and compensated for according to UiB regulations.

  • Practical experience with the Unit4 platform to order lab consumables and reagents is required.
  • Practical experience with marine non-bilaterian research models is a requirement.
  • Microinjection of zygotes for CRISPR/Cas9-mediated knock-in and knock-out gene editing is a requirement.

  • Generation of transgenic reporter lines using I-SceI meganuclease-mediated transgenesis is an advantage.
  • The applicant must be able to communicate fluently (written and spoken) in English.
  • Some knowledge of Norwegian will need to be acquired if not possessed at the time of recruitment.
  • Personal skills that allow constructive interaction with the group members are required.

We can offer:
  • A challenging position with interesting tasks in an internationally acknowledged scientific environment.
  • Position as departmental engineer (code 1085 in the basic collective agreement) and a gross annual salary from NOK 487 800 – NOK 540 500 (equivalent to pay grade 48 - 55) upon appointment. A higher salary may be considered for a particularly well-qualified applicant.
  • Enrolment in the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund
  • Good welfare benefits

Your application must include:
  • A brief account of the applicant's motivation for applying for the position.
