About the Job

The Department of Information Security and Communication Technology (IIK) has a vacancy for an 18 month’s position as Researcher in Communications Technology and Networking. 5G technology has been promoted as a solution for many diverse use-cases and application scenarios. Technologies like slicing, softwarization, multi-edge computing, massive MIMO and 5G new radio allow to tailor the technical system to support the requirements of various use-cases over a single platform. While we have been working for more than 10 years on this technology, there is still limited experience and access to real-world 5G deployments. Accordingly, there exists a lot of unclearness about the prospects and capabilities of 5G technology, the different releases, and available commercial and non-commercial implementations. Potential adopters of the technology face key challenges on which deployment options to select, under which settings the 5G deployment satisfies their non-functional requirements like performance or dependability, and how to securely integrate their use-cases into a 5G system. The position shall work together with partners in the SFI NORCICS on these challenges by extending the available 5G platform, integrating use-cases, and assessing relevant KPIs.

The research will be carried out within the context of SFI NORCICS , the research-based innovation Norwegian Center for Cybersecurity in Critical Sectors. These sectors include electricity production and distribution, oil & gas production and distribution, manufacturing, healthcare, industrial production, smart districts. NORCICS follows a holistic, comprehensive and systemic approach addressing people, processes and technology to protect critical sectors throughout the cybersecurity core functions (identify, protect, detect, respond, recover). NORCICS has partners from academia, research, the public sector and industry.
The position creates an opportunity for more collaboration with partners from industry and public sector.

The working place is NTNU campus in Trondheim. 

Your immediate leader is the Head of the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology. 

Duties of the position

The researcher will:

• Setup and maintenance of test beds (system design, installation, configuration, integration, operation), including for mobile data communication with focus on 5G and beyond systems
• Program and system development for research and educational projects with focus on use-case integration into 5G and beyond systems
• Participation in data analysis and measurements in collaboration with other researchers and industry/user partners
• Administration and management of infrastructure and networks, including of Linux systems, virtual machines and containers, cloud and edge cloud solutions, and storage systems
• Coordinate and manage the Network group teams working on R&I projects in digital infrastructures, HPC, 5G and beyond
• Participate as an active member in activities of the Networking Group and in activities of the Department of Information Security and Communication Technology (IIK), including supervision and co-supervision of MSc and PhD students

Required selection criteria

• You must have completed a master degree, or a master degree and a Norwegian doctoral degree or equivalent in communication technology, computer science, or equivalent. If you have not completed the master/PhD degree, you must submit a confirmation that the master/PhD thesis has been submitted. Documentation of the obtained master/PhD degree must be presented before you can take up the position.
• You must be a citizen of an EU or NATO member state.
• Being able to attend and present at national and international forums.
• Good written and oral English language skills.

Preferred selection criteria

• Knowledge and technical skills in any of the following areas:
  • Mobile broadband, 5G architectures and deployment options (NSA, SA, O-RAN, non-public 5G networks, campus networks)
  • Integrating and testing IT and OT systems
  • Development, instrumentalization and operation of laboratory facilities for use-case testing
  • Design, implementation, and verification of distributed systems
• Track record with publications on relevant research areas in credible journals and conferences.
• Experience with participating in EU and/or nationally funded R&I projects related to cyber security for critical infrastructure and cyberphysical systems.
• Experience with having developed research project proposals for external funding bodies such as the European Commission, Research Council of Norway, etc.
• Good written and oral Norwegian language skills.

• Available for travelling to physical meeting and events within and outside Norway.
• Flexibility and willingness to work on a broad range of topics covered by the activities of the Networking group.
• Initiative-taking and self-starter who works well with minimal supervision and shows excellent judgement about when to look to managers and teammates for guidance, and when and how to communicate with diverse stakeholders.
• Team player with a proven track record of building cross-functional relationships and ability to work in an international research team.
• Effective communication and negotiation skills, both written and verbal persuasiveness and strong influential skills.
• Eager to learn with a high desire to perform and disseminate high-quality research.

Salary and conditions

The gross salary for the position of Researcher (code 1108 or 1109) is normally remunerated at gross from NOK 502 300 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. From the salary, 2% is deducted as a contribution to the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund. 

The employment period is for 18 months.

The engagement is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU

The position is subject to external funding. 

It is a prerequisite that you can be present at and accessible to the institution daily.
